Can ChatGPT edit videos? What it can and cannot do with video

ChatGPT cannot edit video files like an editor, but it can script and plan them, edit photos, and generate clips through Sora. What works and what does not.

Key takeaways

  • Use ChatGPT for the thinking around a video, the script, shot list, captions and titles, and a video editor for the cut.
  • Generated video comes from a separate model, Sora, not from the chat itself, and access depends on your plan and country.
  • For long videos, work from a transcript and a few key frames instead of uploading the whole file.
  • A slideshow from photos is a one-line ffmpeg command that any assistant can write for you.
  • Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Perplexity all have free tiers; test the same task in two before settling.

ChatGPT cannot open a video file and cut, trim or colour-grade it the way an editor such as DaVinci Resolve or CapCut does. What it can do is plan and script videos, write captions and titles, edit photos, write code that assembles simple clips, and, through OpenAI's separate video model Sora, generate short video from text or images. This page sorts what works from what does not for making, editing and analysing video, how Claude compares, and which free tools sit alongside ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT edit videos?

No, not directly. ChatGPT is not a video editor: it cannot trim your footage on a timeline, add transitions or export a finished edit of the clip you upload.

It helps with everything around the edit. Give it your script or transcript and it will suggest where to cut, write an edit decision list with timestamps, draft on-screen text and captions, and propose B-roll ideas. It can also write commands for tools that do edit, for example an ffmpeg command that trims a clip from 00:01:10 to 00:02:30 or burns subtitles into a video, which you then run on your own machine. For real editing, pair it with an editor: DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or CapCut, several of which have their own AI features such as automatic captions and silence removal.

Can ChatGPT make videos?

ChatGPT on its own produces text and images, not finished videos. Video generation comes from Sora, OpenAI's video model, which is offered alongside ChatGPT on eligible plans and in supported countries.

Inside ChatGPT you can still produce the parts of a video: a script, a shot list, voice-over text, thumbnails and images for each scene. With its code tool it can sometimes assemble a very simple clip, such as a slideshow, by writing and running Python, but that is a workaround, not a video feature. For a talking explainer, the dependable workflow is ChatGPT for the script, a screen or camera recording by you, and an editor for the cut. Generated footage is best for short illustrative shots, not for a full lecture or product demo.

Does ChatGPT generate videos?

Not by itself. OpenAI's text-to-video model Sora generates short videos from a prompt or an image, and it is available through its own app and website for eligible users.

Sora produces short clips with sound from a description such as "a time-lapse of a college campus at dawn". Results are impressive for mood and motion but can still get hands, text on screen and physics wrong, so plan to generate several takes and pick the best. Availability, clip length and limits depend on plan and region and have changed since launch, so check OpenAI's Sora page for the current details. Label AI-generated footage clearly when you publish it; platforms increasingly require this.

Can ChatGPT make videos from photos?

Not as a built-in feature, but it can write the command that does it. A slideshow from photos is one ffmpeg command, and image-to-video models such as Sora can animate a still photo.

For a simple slideshow, name your photos in order and run:

ffmpeg -framerate 1/3 -i img%03d.jpg -c:v libx264 -r 30 -pix_fmt yuv420p slideshow.mp4

That shows each image for three seconds and writes an MP4 that plays everywhere. Ask ChatGPT to add a fade between images or a music track and it will extend the command. If you want the photo itself to move, a camera push or a person turning their head, that is image-to-video generation, which needs a video model such as Sora rather than the chat.

Can ChatGPT edit photos?

Yes. ChatGPT can generate images and edit an uploaded photo from a text instruction: change the background, alter the style, remove an object, or combine elements from several images.

Upload the photo and describe the change precisely, for example "replace the background with a plain light grey studio backdrop, keep the person unchanged". Edits regenerate the image, so faces and small text can shift slightly; check details before using the result in anything official. For pixel-exact work, such as a passport-style photo or brand assets, use a real editor like Photoshop, GIMP or Canva. Never use AI edits to misrepresent a real person or a document, and keep the original file.

Can ChatGPT analyse videos?

Only in limited ways. The dependable method is to give ChatGPT a transcript and a few key frames as images. It reads those well, while full-length video understanding is stronger in models built for it, such as Gemini.

For a lecture or meeting, generate a transcript with a speech-to-text tool, then ask ChatGPT for a summary, chapter timestamps or quiz questions. I built live speech-to-text into my OCR & Speech Workspace for exactly this reason: once speech is text, every search and summary tool works on it. For visual questions, export frames at the moments that matter and upload them as images. In the mobile app, voice mode with the camera can look at what you show it live, which helps for quick visual questions.

Can you send ChatGPT videos?

You can attach some files, but a video upload is not the same as video understanding. What ChatGPT can do with an attached video depends on the tools available in your plan, and long clips are rarely handled well.

In practice, ChatGPT may be able to process a short file with its code tool, for example extracting frames or metadata with Python, then look at those frames. It will not reliably watch a long video and answer about every scene. Sending a link to a YouTube video does not help either: unless browsing can read a transcript, it sees the page, not the footage. Send the transcript plus key frames instead, and say exactly what you need from them.

Can Claude AI edit videos?

No. Claude works with text, images and documents such as PDFs, not video files, so it cannot cut or render video. Like ChatGPT, it is useful for scripts, transcripts, captions and the code that drives editing tools.

Claude is strong at turning a rough transcript into a tight script, writing subtitles in SRT format, and producing ffmpeg or Python commands for repetitive edits such as batch trimming or adding a watermark. Developers also use it to write programmatic video code, for example a Remotion project where each scene is a React component rendered to MP4. Analyse footage the same way as with ChatGPT: a transcript plus selected frames as images.

Can ChatGPT edit videos for YouTube?

It cannot cut your YouTube video, but it can do most of the work around it: script, hook, title, description, chapter timestamps, tags, thumbnail concepts and a pinned comment.

A workflow that saves hours:

  • Write the script with ChatGPT, then read it aloud and rewrite anything you would not say.
  • Record, edit in your editor, and export a transcript with timestamps.
  • Ask ChatGPT for chapters from the transcript, three title options and a description that opens with the main point.
  • Generate thumbnail ideas, then design the final thumbnail yourself so your face and text stay sharp.

Watch retention, not the assistant's opinion, to judge what works.

What are free AI tools like ChatGPT?

Google Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Meta AI, DeepSeek and Mistral's Le Chat are general AI assistants with free tiers. All of them chat, write and explain code, and most read images and documents.

Each has a strength. Gemini fits into Gmail, Docs and Android and handles video input well. Claude is careful with long documents and code. Copilot is built into Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365. Perplexity answers with sources from a live web search. Free tiers come with usage limits and sometimes older models, and the limits change often. Pick two, run the same real task, such as summarising your lecture notes, in both, and keep the one whose answer you would actually use.
