Two years ago I was the first-year with a broken idea — Living Space Automation was my first major tech flop. In July 2025 I stood at the front of the VSICS Kanpur BCA induction and talked to 100+ first-years about the next three years. In between, a community of 500+ developers and 200+ students mentored, one conversation at a time. The pattern is consistent. The students who ship in first year do three things the others don't: post their projects before they feel ready, talk to strangers, and let themselves be bad at something in public. This deck is how I run mentoring around those three, what the sessions look like, and the questions students actually ask. I also build tools.scult.in — 15 free tools, 1,200+ prompts and a 50,000-skill library, free for anyone, no signup.
