Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT launched publicly on 30 November 2022 as a free research preview from OpenAI.
  • Message caps and context limits exist because each response uses scarce computing capacity.
  • Lag usually comes from long chats, peak load or browser issues; start new chats often.
  • Hallucinations come from predicting plausible text; search, sources and grounding reduce them.
  • Chats, history and archives are managed in Settings, while video generation lives in Sora.

OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public on 30 November 2022 as a free research preview, and it has since grown into an assistant with usage limits, memory, settings and media features. I build AI products that ground answers in sources, such as RAG.NextUpgrad, so this page covers ChatGPT's release, why it has limits, why it lags and hallucinates, deleting chats and history, finding settings and archived chats, and whether ChatGPT can make or watch videos.

When was ChatGPT released to the public?

ChatGPT was released to the public on 30 November 2022 as a free research preview by OpenAI, built on a model from the GPT-3.5 series fine-tuned for conversation with reinforcement learning from human feedback.

It spread faster than almost any consumer app before it, and competing assistants followed quickly, such as Google's Bard, later renamed Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude. OpenAI launched the paid ChatGPT Plus plan in February 2023 and GPT-4 in March 2023, followed by voice, image understanding, image generation, search, memory and agent features over the next years. The original research preview framing explains the early warnings about mistakes, which remain relevant today: always verify important answers.

Why does ChatGPT have limits?

ChatGPT limits messages because every response uses expensive computing power, especially on advanced models. Limits share capacity fairly among users, prevent abuse and differ by plan, with free users getting fewer messages on the most capable models.

There are several kinds of limits: message caps per time window, which reset after a few hours; context limits, the maximum text a conversation can hold; file upload limits; and limits on features such as image generation or deep research. When you hit a cap, ChatGPT may switch you to a smaller model until it resets. To reduce hitting limits, write clear, complete prompts, start new chats for new topics and use lighter models for simple tasks.

Why does ChatGPT lag so much?

ChatGPT usually lags because of very long conversations, heavy server load at peak times, slower reasoning models, browser issues or a weak internet connection. Long chats force the page to render a lot of text, which slows browsers noticeably.

Fixes: start a new chat for new topics, since long threads slow both the interface and responses; refresh the page or try the desktop or mobile app; disable browser extensions that modify pages; clear the cache; and check the OpenAI status page for outages. Reasoning models deliberately think before answering, so pauses there are expected. If hanging happens only on one device or network, test another to isolate the cause. Updating your browser also helps, since older versions handle heavy pages poorly.

Why does ChatGPT hallucinate so much?

ChatGPT hallucinates because language models generate likely-sounding text rather than looking up verified facts. When it lacks knowledge, training and evaluation often reward confident guesses over admitting uncertainty, so it may invent details, citations or numbers.

Hallucinations increase with obscure topics, recent events, exact figures, long quotes and requests for sources. Reduce them by enabling search so answers cite live sources, asking it to say when it is unsure, providing documents to answer from, and verifying claims in the original sources. Grounding helps most: RAG.NextUpgrad answers from retrieved documents with citations and a confidence gate that declines when evidence is weak, a pattern that cuts invented answers. Treat ChatGPT as a draft partner, not an authority.

Can you delete ChatGPT history?

Yes. Delete a single chat from its menu in the sidebar, or remove everything with the delete all chats option in Settings. Deleted chats disappear from your history immediately and are scheduled for removal from OpenAI's systems.

OpenAI's help centre explains its retention timelines, including exceptions for security or legal obligations, so check it for current details. For conversations you do not want saved at all, use Temporary Chat, which does not appear in history or create memories. Memory is separate from chat history: review and delete saved memories under Settings, Personalization. You can also turn off the setting that lets your content improve models, under Data controls, and export your data before deleting.

Should you delete ChatGPT?

Delete your ChatGPT account only if you no longer need it or have privacy concerns that settings cannot address. Deleting an account is permanent, removes your chats and cannot be undone, so export your data first.

Alternatives often meet privacy goals without deletion: turn off model training on your content, use Temporary Chat, delete specific conversations, clear memory and avoid sharing sensitive personal, financial or health details. If you are deleting the mobile app only, your account and history remain on the web. Students and professionals should also check institutional rules about AI tools for confidential work. To delete the account, use the delete account option in Settings and follow the confirmation steps.

Where do you find ChatGPT settings?

On the web and desktop app, click your profile name or icon at the bottom of the left sidebar, then choose Settings. On mobile, open the sidebar menu and tap your name or profile icon.

Settings are grouped into sections such as General, for theme and language; Personalization, for custom instructions and memory; Data controls, for training preferences, export and archived chats; Security, for multi-factor authentication; and Account or subscription details. Voice options and connected apps have their own sections. The interface changes often, so if a menu has moved, search OpenAI's help centre for the setting by name. Reviewing personalization and data controls once is worthwhile for every regular user.

Where do you find ChatGPT archived chats?

Open Settings, find Archived chats in the Data controls or General section, and select Manage. A list of archived conversations appears, where you can open, unarchive or delete them.

Archiving hides a chat from the sidebar without deleting it, which keeps history tidy while preserving useful conversations. To archive, open a chat's menu in the sidebar and choose Archive. Unarchiving returns the chat to the sidebar with its full history. Archiving suits finished projects you may need again, while deletion suits chats you never want back. On mobile, the same option sits in Settings. If you cannot find it, update the app, since menu locations change between releases.

Can ChatGPT generate video?

ChatGPT itself focuses on text, code and images. OpenAI's video generation lives in Sora, a separate app and website that creates short videos from text prompts or images, with availability that varies by country and plan.

Inside ChatGPT, you can still plan videos: write scripts, storyboards, shot lists, captions and prompts for video tools, and generate still images for thumbnails or frames. Other video generators include Google's Veo, Runway and Kling. Generated video should be labelled where platforms require it, and you should avoid realistic depictions of real people without consent. For editing existing footage, ChatGPT can write FFmpeg commands or suggest cuts, which you then run in your own editor.

Can you send ChatGPT a video?

Video support is limited and varies by app and plan. A reliable approach is to share key frames as images, or the transcript or audio, which ChatGPT handles well. On mobile, voice mode with video lets ChatGPT see your live camera feed.

For analysis of recorded clips, extract frames at regular intervals with a tool such as FFmpeg and upload the most informative ones, along with context about what happens between them. For talks or lectures, upload the transcript; YouTube often provides one. Gemini handles uploaded video natively and may suit long clips better. Avoid uploading private recordings of other people without consent, and check file size limits before uploading anything large.
