Key takeaways

  • Claude reads text, images and documents; for videos, share transcripts or key frames.
  • Anthropic released Claude in March 2023, and the name is widely linked to Claude Shannon.
  • Claude excels at coding, long documents, careful writing and following detailed instructions.
  • The free plan never expires but has usage limits; pay when limits or missing features block you.
  • Connectors use MCP to link apps, and settings sit under your profile menu.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, first released in March 2023 and now available on the web, desktop and mobile, in Claude Code and through the API. It handles text, images and documents, with connectors linking it to your apps. I build AI products such as the OCR & Speech Workspace and RAG.NextUpgrad, so this page covers whether Claude can watch videos, its history and name, what it is used for and excels at, paying versus free, connectors, settings and installation paths.

Can Claude AI watch videos?

Claude does not natively process video files in the Claude apps. It reads text, images, PDFs and other documents. To analyse a video, share its transcript, captions or a set of key frames as images.

For lectures, meetings or YouTube videos, a transcript gives Claude the content, while screenshots at important moments add visual context. Speech-to-text tools can create transcripts; my OCR & Speech Workspace includes live speech-to-text for this kind of workflow. For visual analysis, extract frames at regular intervals with a tool such as FFmpeg and upload the most informative ones with notes on timing. If you need native video understanding, Gemini processes uploaded video directly.

When was Claude AI invented?

Anthropic released Claude publicly in March 2023, along with a faster Claude Instant model. Anthropic itself was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei.

Claude 2 followed in July 2023 with a longer context window, and the Claude 3 family, Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, arrived in March 2024, adding image understanding. Claude 3.5 Sonnet in mid-2024 became popular for coding, and later generations added extended thinking, computer use, Claude Code and agentic capabilities. Each generation improved reasoning, coding and instruction following, with model names now following the Opus, Sonnet and Haiku families plus version numbers.

Why is Claude AI named Claude?

Anthropic has not given a single detailed official explanation, but the name is widely reported to honour Claude Shannon, the mathematician who founded information theory. It is also a friendly, human-sounding name, distinct from technical product names.

Also asked as: why claude ai is name claude

Claude is not an acronym, so it does not stand for anything. Shannon's 1948 work on communication and information underpins modern computing and language modelling, which makes the tribute fitting. The name also reflects Anthropic's aim for an assistant that feels approachable and conversational. Model tiers use poetic names, Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, suggesting increasing size and capability, much like short and long literary forms.

What is Claude AI used for?

People use Claude for writing and editing, coding, analysing long documents, research with web search, learning and tutoring, data analysis, brainstorming, and agentic tasks through Claude Code and connected tools.

Professionals use it to draft reports, review contracts, summarise meetings, analyse spreadsheets and build software. Students use it to understand concepts, get feedback on writing and practise problems, ideally following their institution's AI rules. Developers use the API to build chatbots, document processing and agents. Projects let you store files and instructions for repeated work, while artifacts create documents, code and interactive pages alongside the chat. Always verify important outputs, especially facts and calculations.

What does Claude AI excel at?

Claude is especially strong at coding and agentic software work, analysing long documents, careful writing with consistent tone, following detailed instructions, and reasoning through complex problems with extended thinking.

Its large context window lets it read long reports, codebases or multiple documents at once and answer questions across them. Claude Code has made it a popular choice for developers doing multi-file changes and refactors. Writers value its natural prose and ability to follow style guidelines. It is less suited to tasks needing native image generation or video understanding, where other tools fit better. As with any model, strengths shift with releases, so test on your own tasks.

Should you pay for Claude AI?

Pay if you hit free plan limits regularly, need the most capable models, want Claude Code, or use Projects, Research and connectors heavily. If you use Claude occasionally for short tasks, the free plan may be enough.

Paid plans offer much higher usage, priority access during busy periods and access to advanced features, with higher tiers for heavy users and Team or Enterprise plans for organisations. Try the free plan for a few weeks and note how often you reach limits or need missing features. Compare with other assistants on your real tasks, since the best value depends on what you do most. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current plan details.

How long is Claude AI free?

Claude's free plan has no time limit: you can use it indefinitely with a Claude account. Instead of expiring, it limits how much you can use within a rolling time window, and some features are reserved for paid plans.

When you reach the free limit, Claude tells you when access resets, usually within a few hours. Usage depends on message length, attachments and conversation length, so long chats with large files use the allowance faster. Starting new chats, attaching only relevant files and keeping prompts focused stretch free usage. Students and educators should also check whether their institution provides access through an education or enterprise agreement.

What are Claude AI connectors?

Connectors link Claude to external apps and data, such as Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Notion, Slack and many business tools, so it can search, read and sometimes act on your information during a conversation.

Many connectors use the Model Context Protocol, an open standard Anthropic introduced in 2024 for connecting AI to tools. You can add connectors from a directory, or add custom remote servers built by your organisation or others. On the desktop app, extensions connect local tools and files. Grant only the access you need, review what each connector can do, and remember that content Claude reads through connectors enters the conversation context.

Where are Claude AI settings?

On claude.ai and the desktop app, click your name or initials in the bottom-left corner and choose Settings. On mobile, open the menu and tap your profile. Settings cover your profile, appearance, privacy, billing, features and connectors.

Also asked as: where is claude ai settings

Key sections include Profile, where you add preferences Claude should consider; Capabilities or features, where you enable tools such as code execution and memory; Connectors, for linking apps; Privacy, for controlling whether your chats help improve models; and Billing, for plans and usage. Claude Code has its own settings files in a .claude folder. The interface changes over time, so search Anthropic's help centre if a setting has moved.

Where is Claude AI installed?

On Windows, the Claude desktop app installs per user under the AppData Local folder in your user profile. On macOS, it installs in the Applications folder. The web version at claude.ai needs no installation.

Claude Code, the command-line tool, installs through Anthropic's native installer or a package manager, placing the claude command on your PATH, with user settings, memory files and session data in a .claude folder in your home directory. Project-specific settings live in a .claude folder inside each repository. To uninstall the desktop app, use Windows Settings or drag it from Applications on macOS. Mobile apps install from the App Store or Google Play.
