Key takeaways

  • Claude subscriptions and the Claude API are billed separately, and API keys do not work in Claude Desktop.
  • Claude Code is an agentic coding tool built on Claude models, usable with subscriptions or API billing.
  • A 529 means overloaded, so retry with backoff and add fallback, while 429 means your own rate limit.
  • The Gemini Developer API suits prototypes, while Vertex AI adds enterprise controls.
  • Azure OpenAI hosts OpenAI models with Azure security, regions and deployment names.

Model providers offer the same models through different products: chat apps with subscriptions, developer APIs billed per token, coding tools and enterprise cloud versions. Mixing them up causes confusing errors and bills. I build apps with multi-provider fallback, such as RAG.NextUpgrad, so this page covers the Claude API versus the Claude apps and Claude Code, API keys in Claude Desktop, 529 and key errors, the Gemini API, AI Studio, Vertex AI and Google keys, and OpenAI versus Azure OpenAI.

What is the difference between the Claude API and Claude AI?

Claude AI usually means the Claude apps at claude.ai, desktop and mobile, used through Free or paid subscription plans. The Claude API gives developers programmatic access to Claude models, billed separately per token through Anthropic's developer console.

A Pro or Max subscription does not include API credits, and API usage does not unlock app features. The apps provide a ready interface with projects, artifacts, connectors and memory, while the API lets you build your own applications, control prompts and parameters, and integrate Claude into products. Developers often use both: the app for daily work and the API for building. Each has separate usage limits, billing and data terms, so review both.

Can you use your Claude API key in Claude Desktop?

No. Claude Desktop signs in with your claude.ai account and uses your subscription, not API keys. API keys work with the Anthropic SDKs, direct API calls, Claude Code and third-party applications that accept your own key.

If you want a desktop chat interface billed through your API account, some third-party clients let you enter an Anthropic API key, though you should review their security before trusting them with it. Claude Code can authenticate either with your subscription login or with an API key from an environment variable. Keep API keys secret, store them in environment variables or secret managers, and rotate them immediately if exposed.

What is the difference between the Claude API and Claude Code?

The Claude API is raw access to Claude models for any application you build. Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool, built on those models, that reads your codebase, edits files and runs commands in your terminal, IDE, desktop or browser.

Claude Code handles the agent loop, tools, permissions and context management for software tasks, so you do not have to build them. It can bill through a Claude subscription or through API usage. The API suits building your own products, including custom agents with the Claude Agent SDK, which exposes the same agent framework that powers Claude Code. Choose Claude Code for development work and the API for shipping features to users.

Why are you getting 529 errors from the Claude API?

A 529 error means overloaded: Anthropic's API is temporarily experiencing high demand across users. It is not caused by your account or code, unlike a 429 error, which means you exceeded your own rate limits.

Handle 529 errors with automatic retries using exponential backoff and jitter; the official SDKs retry some errors automatically, and you can raise the retry count. Check Anthropic's status page during persistent errors. For production reliability, add fallback to another Claude model or another provider, as RAG.NextUpgrad does with multi-provider fallback. Avoid hammering the API with immediate retries, which worsens congestion. Log error rates so you can see patterns over time.

Why does a Claude API call fail even with a key?

Common causes include sending the key in the wrong header, which should be x-api-key; a missing anthropic-version header; a revoked or mistyped key; no credits or billing set up; a wrong model name; or calling the wrong endpoint.

Read the error type in the response: authentication errors point to the key, permission errors to workspace or model access, not found errors to the model name or URL, and invalid request errors to malformed parameters. Using the official SDK avoids most header mistakes. Check that your environment variable is loaded in the process making the call. Keys from Anthropic's console do not work on Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI, which use cloud credentials.

What is the difference between the Gemini API and Vertex AI?

Both serve Google's Gemini models. The Gemini Developer API, used with Google AI Studio keys, is simpler and has a free tier, suiting prototypes and smaller apps. Vertex AI is Google Cloud's enterprise platform, adding IAM, private networking, data residency and service agreements.

Vertex AI also integrates with other Google Cloud services, such as BigQuery, model tuning, evaluation tools and access to third-party models. Authentication differs: the Developer API uses API keys, while Vertex AI uses Google Cloud service accounts and credentials. The Google Gen AI SDK supports both, so code can move between them with configuration changes. Start with the Developer API, and migrate to Vertex AI when compliance or scale requires it.

What is the difference between Google AI Studio and the Gemini API?

Google AI Studio is a web interface for experimenting with Gemini models, testing prompts, adjusting settings and getting API keys. The Gemini API is the programmatic interface your code calls to use those models in applications.

In AI Studio, you can try multimodal prompts, structured outputs, function calling and system instructions, then view equivalent code in Python or JavaScript. It also shows usage and manages keys and projects. Once a prompt works, move it into your application using the API and SDK. Think of AI Studio as the workshop and the API as the production line. Both use the same underlying models and project quotas.

What is the difference between a Google API key and a Gemini API key?

A Gemini API key is a Google Cloud API key enabled for the Generative Language API, usually created through Google AI Studio. A general Google API key might be enabled for other services, such as Maps or YouTube.

Technically, both are Google Cloud API keys, and one key can be enabled for several APIs, but best practice is separate, restricted keys for each service and environment. Restrict each key to specific APIs and, for browser keys, to specific websites. Gemini keys should stay on servers, since they grant access to your quota and billing. If a key is exposed publicly, delete it and create a new one immediately.

What is the difference between the OpenAI API and the Azure OpenAI API?

Both offer OpenAI models. The OpenAI API is run by OpenAI directly. Azure OpenAI runs the same models on Microsoft Azure, adding enterprise security, regional deployment, private networking, Azure identity integration, content filtering and Microsoft's compliance commitments.

Also asked as: difference between openai api and azure openai api

With Azure, you create deployments of specific models in chosen regions and call them by deployment name, using Azure endpoints and authentication. New models sometimes reach the OpenAI API before Azure. Organisations already using Azure often prefer it for governance, billing consolidation and data residency. The official OpenAI SDKs support both with configuration changes. Compare model availability, regional options and quotas for your needs before choosing one.

What is the difference between the Gemini API and Google AI?

Google AI is Google's umbrella for its artificial intelligence research, products and developer tools, including Gemini models, Gemma open models, Google AI Studio and research from Google DeepMind. The Gemini API is one specific developer product within it.

Google AI for Developers is the documentation hub covering the Gemini API, Gemma, on-device AI with LiteRT and other tools. Consumer products such as the Gemini app and AI features in Search and Workspace also fall under Google's AI efforts but are separate from the API. When reading guides, check whether they refer to the consumer app, the developer API or Vertex AI, since features, limits and terms differ.
