Key takeaways

  • Computer science is among the most popular majors, which intensifies entry-level competition.
  • Recent graduate unemployment rose, so internships, projects and specialisation matter more.
  • Demand in 2030 favours AI, data, security and domain-aware engineers.
  • Degrees remain valuable foundations, but skills and portfolios decide outcomes.
  • Commerce students can study computing through BCA or open-stream programmes.

Computer science remains one of the most popular fields of study, but rising competition, AI coding tools and uneven entry-level hiring raise fair questions about its future. The short answer: the field is changing, not disappearing. I am a BCA student who leads engineering at SCULT INDIA and mentors students, so this page covers how many study computer science, graduate unemployment, demand in 2030 and 2040, degrees and AI, commerce students, physics requirements and engineering rings.

How many computer science majors are there?

Computer science is one of the most popular fields worldwide. In the United States, colleges award over one hundred thousand computer and information sciences bachelor's degrees a year, and India produces large numbers of computing graduates through B.Tech, BCA and B.Sc programmes.

Also asked as: how many computer science majors are unemployed

Enrolment grew rapidly over the past decade as technology careers expanded, making computing departments among the largest in many universities. Exact numbers vary by year and definition, since some statistics combine computer science with information technology or software engineering. Official sources such as the National Center for Education Statistics in the United States and AICTE in India publish detailed data. The large supply of graduates is one reason entry-level competition has intensified.

How many computer science graduates are unemployed?

Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York published in 2025 showed recent computer science graduates in the United States with unemployment around six percent, higher than many other majors, reflecting a tougher entry-level market.

Causes include slower tech hiring after the pandemic boom, more graduates competing for junior roles, and AI tools reducing demand for some routine coding tasks. Unemployment remains low for experienced engineers, and many graduates find roles beyond traditional software companies. Students improve their chances with internships, real projects, specialisation in areas such as AI or security, and strong communication skills. Networking and referrals also help in tight markets. Conditions vary by country, so check local data.

Will computer science be in demand in 2030?

Very likely, though the mix of roles will shift. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects software developer employment to grow much faster than average this decade, and the World Economic Forum lists AI, data and cybersecurity roles among the fastest growing.

Demand will favour people who build and evaluate AI systems, secure infrastructure, work with data and understand specific industries, such as healthcare or finance. Routine coding without judgement will be increasingly automated. Students who combine fundamentals with AI fluency, communication and domain knowledge will be well positioned. Internships and portfolio projects remain the strongest signals to employers, regardless of how the overall market moves year to year.

Will computer science be in demand in 2040?

Predicting 2040 is uncertain, but computing will almost certainly remain central to the economy. The nature of the work may change greatly, with AI handling much implementation while people focus on designing, directing, verifying and governing complex systems.

Foundational skills, such as algorithms, systems thinking, mathematics and security, tend to outlast specific tools, which change every few years. New areas, such as quantum computing, robotics, bioinformatics and AI safety, may expand. The safest strategy is learning how to learn: building strong fundamentals, staying curious and adapting as tools evolve. People who understand both technology and human needs will remain valuable whatever the job titles become.

Will computer science degrees become obsolete?

Unlikely. Degrees provide fundamentals, structured learning, networks and credentials that employers and visa systems still value. What is changing is that degrees alone are not enough; skills, projects and adaptability matter more than ever.

Curricula are updating to include AI, data and security, while alternative paths, such as bootcamps and self-learning, offer routes for some people. Employers increasingly assess demonstrated ability, so graduates with portfolios and internships outperform those with grades alone. A degree remains a strong foundation if you use the years to build real experience. My own BCA path combined with shipping real products shows how a degree and practical work reinforce each other.

Will AI replace computer science?

No. AI is a product of computer science and depends on it. AI will automate parts of programming, but someone must design systems, define requirements, verify correctness, secure software and build the AI itself.

Also asked as: will computer science be replaced by ai reddit

The profession is shifting from writing every line by hand to directing and reviewing AI-generated code, designing architectures and handling problems AI cannot. Entry-level roles focused on routine coding are changing fastest, so students should learn to use AI tools well while deepening fundamentals. Fields such as AI engineering, evaluation, security and infrastructure are growing. Studying how AI works makes you harder to replace, and graduates who understand its limits will be the ones steering it.

Can you do computer science after 12th commerce?

Yes, through programmes that accept commerce students, such as BCA, B.Sc in computer science at some universities where class 12 maths is required or recommended, and online degrees such as IIT Madras's BS in Data Science and Applications.

Also asked as: can i do computer science after 12th commerce

B.Tech in computer science usually requires physics, chemistry and maths in class 12, so commerce students generally take BCA or B.Sc routes. Check each college's eligibility, since rules differ on maths, and take bridge courses in mathematics where required. Start learning programming early to close gaps. Later, MCA or M.Tech programmes open further paths. Commerce students bring business understanding valuable in fintech, analytics and product roles, making the combination a genuine advantage.

Why is computer science considered engineering?

Computer science applies scientific and mathematical principles to design, build and test complex systems, which is the essence of engineering. Software engineering adds disciplined processes for reliability, safety and maintainability at scale.

In India and many other countries, computer science is taught in engineering colleges as B.Tech or B.E. programmes with engineering accreditation. Elsewhere, it may sit in science faculties, emphasising theory and mathematics. Both views are valid: computer science spans theoretical science, such as computability, and engineering practice, such as building secure distributed systems. Unlike civil or electrical engineering, software engineers usually do not need professional licences, though ethical responsibility applies to every software builder.

Do computer science majors have to take physics?

It depends on the programme. In India, B.Tech computer science requires physics in class 12 and usually a physics course in the first year, while BCA and many B.Sc programmes do not. In the United States, many universities require calculus-based physics or a lab science.

Physics teaches problem solving, modelling and mathematical reasoning that support computing, especially for graphics, robotics, hardware, simulations and quantum computing. If your programme does not require it, you can still take it as an elective if your interests lie in those areas. Discrete mathematics and statistics usually matter more for most computing roles. Check your university's catalogue for exact requirements, since they vary between institutions and change over time.

Do computer science majors get engineering rings?

Sometimes. In the United States, the Order of the Engineer ring ceremony is open to graduates of accredited engineering programmes, which can include computer science in some colleges. Canada's Iron Ring is for graduates of accredited engineering programmes, such as software engineering.

Whether you are eligible depends on your degree's accreditation and your institution's participation. Computer science programmes in science faculties are often not eligible, while software or computer engineering programmes usually are. The rings symbolise ethical responsibility to the public, a value increasingly relevant for software and AI engineers whose systems affect millions of people. Ask your department about ceremonies and eligibility well before graduation.
