Copilot vs GitHub Copilot: the difference, model updates and limits

Microsoft Copilot is a general assistant; GitHub Copilot is for code. How they differ, how new models like Claude Fable arrive, and how they compare to Cursor.

Key takeaways

  • Microsoft Copilot answers general questions and works in Windows and Office; GitHub Copilot lives in your code editor and on GitHub.
  • Which models Copilot offers changes often; the GitHub changelog and the model picker are the only reliable answer to 'will it get model X'.
  • Copilot is sometimes wrong in confident ways, so verify facts through its citations and code through tests.
  • When Copilot misbehaves, check the GitHub and Microsoft 365 status pages before debugging your own setup.
  • Compare coding tools on one real task in your own repository, not on feature lists.

Microsoft Copilot and GitHub Copilot share a name but do different jobs. Microsoft Copilot is a general AI assistant for questions, writing and Office work; GitHub Copilot is a coding assistant inside VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs and GitHub itself. This page explains the difference, how new models such as Anthropic's Claude Fable reach Copilot, why Copilot is sometimes wrong, what to do when it seems broken, its usage limits and history, where Copilot Studio agents live, and how GitHub Copilot compares with Cursor, Windsurf and Antigravity.

Copilot vs GitHub Copilot: what is the difference?

Microsoft Copilot is a general assistant for questions, writing, images and Microsoft 365 work. GitHub Copilot is a coding assistant: completions as you type, chat about your code, and agents that edit files and open pull requests.

Also asked as: vs copilot github

They use different accounts and plans. Microsoft Copilot signs in with a Microsoft account or a work account; GitHub Copilot signs in with a GitHub account, and GitHub offers a free tier plus paid individual and organisation plans. Their context is different too. Microsoft Copilot sees the web and, for work accounts, your Microsoft 365 files. GitHub Copilot sees your open files, your repository and, on GitHub, issues and pull requests. If your question is about code, use GitHub Copilot or another coding tool, because a general assistant does not see your project.

Will Copilot get Fable?

Possibly, but only GitHub can say. GitHub Copilot already offers a model picker with models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and new models are added through announcements on the GitHub changelog.

Claude Fable is Anthropic's newest and most capable generally available model tier, above Opus. Whether and when a model appears in Copilot depends on agreements between GitHub and the model provider, and new models often arrive first for some plans or in preview. The reliable way to know is to watch the GitHub changelog and open the model picker in Copilot Chat in your editor. Organisation admins may also have to enable a new model in Copilot policies before members can select it. Microsoft Copilot, the consumer assistant, does not let you pick a model in the same way.

Will Copilot get better?

Yes, in the sense that the models and features improve with each update, as they have since launch. It will not stop needing review: better models make fewer mistakes, not zero.

Most improvements come from three places: stronger underlying models, better retrieval of the right context, such as indexing your whole repository, and agent features that let Copilot check its own work by running tests or builds. You can improve results today without waiting. Keep files and functions small and clearly named, add a .github/copilot-instructions.md file with your project's conventions, give precise requests, and include the error message or failing test when you ask for a fix.

Is Copilot ever wrong?

Yes. Copilot can state wrong facts confidently, cite sources that do not say what it claims, and suggest code that compiles but has bugs or security problems. That is a property of language models, not a fault in your setup.

Habits that catch most errors:

  • Open the citations behind any factual claim you plan to reuse.
  • Run the code and its tests; never merge a suggestion you have not executed.
  • Ask "what could be wrong with this?" for an independent check.
  • Be extra careful with dates, numbers, API names and library versions, which models often get wrong.

In my own RAG work the fix for confident errors was a confidence gate that refuses to answer on weak evidence. As a user, your version of that gate is checking before you trust.

What is wrong with Copilot today?

If Copilot stops responding or gives errors suddenly, check the service status first: GitHub Status for GitHub Copilot and the Microsoft 365 service health or status page for Microsoft Copilot.

If the status pages are green, work through the usual causes. Sign out and in again, because expired sessions are common. Update the editor extension, since old versions break when the service changes. Check whether you hit a usage limit for the month or for a premium model. On a work or college network, a proxy or firewall may block the Copilot endpoints; try another network to confirm. In an organisation, an admin policy may have disabled a feature or model. Finally, check the extension's output log in VS Code, which usually names the real error.

How many Copilot responses do I get?

It depends on the product and plan. Free tiers include a monthly allowance of completions and chat requests, paid plans raise it, and the most capable models count against a separate allowance of premium requests.

GitHub publishes the current allowances for each plan in its documentation, and your usage is visible in your GitHub settings. Microsoft Copilot has its own limits per conversation and per day that vary by account type and have changed several times. Quoting numbers here would date quickly, so check the plan page for the current figures. If you keep hitting limits, use a smaller model for routine edits and save the premium model for hard problems, and keep conversations focused, because one long rambling chat burns requests faster.

Do Copilot conversations get deleted?

Not automatically in most cases. Consumer Copilot keeps your conversation history until you delete it, and work accounts store Copilot interactions under the organisation's retention policies, which admins control.

In the consumer Copilot app you can delete individual conversations or clear your history in settings. In Microsoft 365, Copilot interactions are kept in the organisation's own environment and can be retained or deleted by compliance policies, so deleting a chat from view may not remove the record your employer keeps. GitHub Copilot Chat in an editor keeps session history locally in the editor, and GitHub documents what prompt and suggestion data it retains for each plan. Never paste passwords or private keys into any assistant.

Where do Copilot Studio agents get stored?

Copilot Studio agents are stored in a Microsoft Power Platform environment, inside that environment's Dataverse database, together with their topics, knowledge settings and connections.

That has practical effects. You choose the environment when you create the agent, and its region decides where the agent's data lives. Agents move between development, test and production environments as solutions, the same way as other Power Platform components, which is how teams version and deploy them. Knowledge files you upload are stored with the agent, while connected sources such as SharePoint sites stay where they are and are searched at question time. Access to the agent follows the environment's security roles, so plan who can edit it before you build.

Can you vibe code with GitHub Copilot?

Yes. Agent mode in VS Code and other editors lets you describe a feature in plain language while Copilot plans the change, edits several files, runs commands and fixes its own errors, which is vibe coding in practice.

It works best for prototypes, hackathon builds and internal tools. To keep the result maintainable, start each task with a short spec, ask for tests alongside the feature, review every diff before accepting it and commit after each working step. Keep secrets in environment variables, not in prompts or code. If a session goes in circles, stop, revert to the last good commit and restate the task in smaller pieces. You should be able to explain every file in the project, because judges and interviewers will ask.

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor vs Windsurf vs Antigravity: which should you use?

All four are AI coding environments with chat, multi-file edits and agents. GitHub Copilot plugs into existing editors and GitHub; Cursor and Windsurf are AI-first editors built on VS Code; Antigravity is Google's agent-first development environment.

How they differ in practice:

  • GitHub Copilot: best if your team lives on GitHub and wants enterprise controls, issue-to-pull-request agents and support for VS Code, Visual Studio and JetBrains.
  • Cursor: a polished AI-native editor with strong codebase-wide context and fast multi-file edits.
  • Windsurf: an AI-native editor with an agent called Cascade; now owned by Cognition.
  • Antigravity: built around agents that plan and run tasks across the editor, terminal and browser, with Gemini models.

Pick by trying one real task, such as adding an endpoint with tests, in each.
