Free AI tools every CS student should learn in 2026: coding assistants, models, notebooks, deployment and the ones I built, with no signup

The AI tools that actually change how a computer science student learns and builds: coding assistants, free model access, notebooks with free GPUs, local model runners, vector databases, deployment platforms, and 15 free browser tools plus a 1,211-prompt library I built. What each is for, its free-tier limits, and how to use it without letting it think for you.

Key takeaways

  • Learn tools in the order you need them: a coding assistant, a model API or local runner, a notebook with a free GPU, a database, a deploy platform.
  • Free tiers are enough for every project on this site. Design for their limits instead of paying before you have users.
  • Use AI assistants to move faster on what you already understand, and turn them off when learning a fundamental for the first time.
  • Tools that need no signup remove the friction that stops students starting; that is why I built fifteen of them free at tools.scult.in.
  • The tool list changes yearly. The skills underneath, prompting, evaluation, deployment, reading docs, do not.

Which AI tools should a CS student learn first?

Five categories, in this order: a coding assistant in your editor, so you build faster; a way to call a model, a free API tier or a local runner; a notebook with a free GPU, for experiments and fine-tuning; a database with a free tier, so projects have real persistence; and a platform to deploy on, so projects have a URL. Everything else is optional until a project demands it. Learn each by shipping something with it, not by watching a tutorial about it.

I mentor 200-plus students through TechVerse Enclave and the same question arrives weekly: which tools? The list below is what I actually use and what students who finish projects actually use, with the free-tier limits that matter. Because signup friction stops more students than difficulty does, I also built fifteen tools that need no account at all, at tools.scult.in [15].

A tool you have to sign up for is a tool you try tomorrow. A tool that opens in a tab is a tool you use now. That is the whole reason tools.scult.in exists. Pranjul Rathour

Which coding assistant should students use?

One you can afford and that lives in your editor. GitHub Copilot is free for verified students through the Student Developer Pack and works inside VS Code [5][6]. Cursor is an AI-first editor with a free tier [13]. Claude Code runs an agent in your terminal that can read, edit and run your project [14]. Pick one, learn its limits, and use it for boilerplate, tests, refactors and explanations of unfamiliar code. Turn it off when you are learning a fundamental for the first time, or you will not learn it.

The rule I give mentees: assistants make you faster at what you understand and slower at learning what you do not. Write your first RAG pipeline by hand; use the assistant for the tenth.

How do students get free access to LLMs?

Three ways. Free API tiers: Google AI Studio gives Gemini API access with a free quota [10]; Groq offers fast inference on open models with a free tier [11]; OpenRouter routes to many models, some free [12]. Local models: Ollama runs open-weight models on your laptop with no account and no cost [4]. Hosted playgrounds: Hugging Face hosts thousands of models and free courses [3]. Start with a free API for speed, and Ollama for privacy and unlimited experimentation.

Free tiers change often; the pricing pages are the truth and this table is a map [10][11][12].

Where can students get free GPUs?

Google Colab gives free GPU sessions with time and availability limits, enough for QLoRA on a small model [1]. Kaggle Notebooks give weekly GPU hours with a generous quota, and host datasets you can use directly [2]. Hugging Face Spaces can run demos with optional paid GPU [3]. For learning: fine-tune a 1 to 3B model on Colab, then move to Kaggle when you need longer runs. Save checkpoints to Drive or the Hub because sessions end.

Which databases and backends have free tiers good enough for projects?

Supabase gives hosted Postgres with auth, storage and the pgvector extension on a free tier, which is a complete backend for a RAG project [7]. Firebase and MongoDB Atlas have free tiers too. For deploying a Python API, Railway and Render both offer free or trial tiers that sleep when idle [8][9]. GitHub Pages hosts static front ends for free, including this site. The pattern: one Postgres, one API host, one static host, all free until you have users.

What free tools did you build, and why no signup?

Fifteen browser tools at tools.scult.in, a 1,211-prompt library where every prompt is stamped with the model and date it was tested against, a 50,000-plus agent-skills library, and a public MCP server so agents can call the same tools [15]. Thirteen of the fifteen tools never send a byte to a server; they run entirely in your browser, which is both faster and the simplest privacy story there is [17]. No signup because every signup screen is a place where a student decides to do it later.

Every calculator shows its formula so you can check it rather than trust it, and the prompt library's stamps exist because a prompt that worked on one model version is a hypothesis on the next.

How should students use AI tools without hurting their learning?

Decide before each task whether the goal is output or understanding. For output, a deadline, a boilerplate, a refactor, use the assistant fully and review what it wrote. For understanding, a new algorithm, a first pipeline, a concept for an exam, write it yourself first, then ask the assistant to critique it. Never submit code you cannot explain line by line, because the interview will ask you to. The students who do best treat assistants like a senior colleague: consult often, copy never without reading.

Which AI tools help with research, writing and productivity?

For reading papers: a chat model with the PDF, asking for the method and the limitations, then reading the paper anyway. For writing: an assistant for structure and clarity, never for facts you have not checked. For notes: any tool that exports plain text, so your notes outlive the tool. For search: AI answer engines for orientation, primary sources for anything you will cite. The habit that matters is checking the source, which no tool does for you.

What free AI tools are there for design and content?

For diagrams and slides, most design tools now have free AI features; for images, be careful with licences and never present generated images as photographs of real events. For content, the same rule as writing: structure from the model, facts from sources. The colour palette generator and favicon generator at tools.scult.in cover the two design tasks every student project actually needs, with contrast checks built in [15].

Which tools will still matter in five years?

None of the specific ones, probably, and all of the skills: prompting a model precisely, evaluating its output, deploying a service, reading documentation, reading a paper, and knowing when to switch the assistant off. Learn tools as instances of those skills, and the next tool is an afternoon, not a semester. My longer list with the reasoning is on the portfolio [16].
