Key takeaways

  • Gemini is Google's family of natively multimodal models, trained on text, code, images, audio and video.
  • Gems are custom versions of Gemini with saved instructions and files for repeated tasks.
  • Gemini can generate videos with Google's Veo models on eligible plans, and charts through code and Canvas.
  • Usage limits and AI credits depend on your plan and the model or tool you use.
  • Google reports a median Gemini text prompt uses a fraction of a millilitre of water for data centre cooling.

Gemini AI works as a family of large multimodal models from Google: transformer networks trained on huge amounts of text, code, images, audio and video, which predict the next part of a response from everything in the conversation. The Gemini app, formerly Bard, wraps these models with Google Search, tools and integrations. I build AI products that switch between model providers, Gemini among the options, so this page covers how it works and what it offers, Gems, video and graphs, limits and credits, speed, water use and photo editing.

How does Gemini AI work?

Gemini models are transformer neural networks trained to predict the next token on vast multimodal data, then tuned with human feedback to follow instructions. They are natively multimodal, so text, images, audio and video are processed in one model rather than bolted together.

Newer versions use mixture-of-experts designs, activating only parts of the network per request for efficiency, and support very long context windows, so they can read long documents or hours of video. "Thinking" variants reason step by step before answering. In the Gemini app, the model can call tools such as Google Search for current information, code execution and Google apps, then combine results into an answer.

What does Gemini AI offer?

Gemini offers a chat assistant for writing, research, coding and learning, with image understanding, image generation and editing, video generation on eligible plans, Deep Research reports, Canvas for documents and code, Gems, and integrations with Gmail, Docs, Drive and other Google apps.

Developers use Gemini models through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, or Vertex AI on Google Cloud, with features such as long context, structured output, function calling and grounding with Search. Gemini is also built into Android, Chrome and Workspace. Paid plans add stronger models, higher limits and more storage; check Google's plan pages for current features in India.

What are Gemini AI Gems?

Gems are custom versions of Gemini that you set up with instructions, and optionally files, for tasks you repeat, such as a study coach, an email editor or a coding helper. Instead of re-explaining context each time, you open the Gem and start.

Create one from the Gems section: give it a name, describe its role and rules, add reference files, test it, then save. Google also provides premade Gems, such as a learning coach. Good Gem instructions are specific: who it helps, what to do, what format to use and what to avoid. Gems can be shared, which helps teams use consistent prompts.

Can Gemini AI generate videos?

Yes, on eligible plans. The Gemini app generates short videos from text prompts using Google's Veo models, and newer Veo versions can produce synchronised audio. Google's Flow tool offers more control for filmmaking with Veo.

Availability, length and daily limits depend on your plan and region. Generated videos carry SynthID watermarks identifying them as AI-made. For best results, describe the subject, action, setting, camera movement, lighting and style in your prompt. Gemini can also help write scripts and storyboards even when video generation is unavailable on your plan.

Can Gemini AI generate graphs?

Yes. Gemini can create charts by writing and running code from data you provide or upload, and can build interactive charts in Canvas. In Google Sheets, Gemini helps create charts and formulas from your spreadsheet data.

Ask specifically: "Create a bar chart of monthly sign-ups from this CSV, with months on the x-axis." Check the underlying numbers, because charts are only as accurate as the data interpretation. For repeatable charts, ask Gemini for the Python or spreadsheet formula it used, so you can rerun it yourself. For diagrams such as flowcharts, it can produce Mermaid code or images.

Does Gemini AI have a limit?

Yes. Gemini apps have usage limits that depend on your plan and the model or feature, such as daily prompts for the most capable models, image and video generations, Deep Research reports and file uploads. Free users have lower limits than paid subscribers.

When you reach a limit, Gemini may switch you to a lighter model or ask you to wait until it resets. Developers face separate API rate limits by tier in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. Google's Gemini Apps Help pages list current limits, which change as models and plans change. For heavy use, a paid plan or the API with your own quota is more predictable.

How do Gemini AI credits work?

Some Google AI plans include monthly AI credits that are spent on generation-heavy features, such as video creation in Flow and Whisk. Each generation consumes credits based on the model and settings, and unused monthly credits typically do not carry over.

Higher plans include more credits, and Google has offered ways to top up. Credits are separate from ordinary chat usage limits. Check your plan's page or the Flow interface to see your balance and the credit cost of each option before generating, since higher-quality video models cost more credits per clip.

Why is Gemini AI so slow?

Gemini can feel slow when using a "thinking" model that reasons before answering, processing long documents or videos, running Deep Research, generating images or video, during high demand, or because of your network or browser.

Fixes:

  • Switch to a faster model for simple tasks.
  • Start a new chat when conversations get very long.
  • Upload smaller files or only relevant pages.
  • Check your connection and disable heavy browser extensions.
  • Try the mobile app or another browser.

For applications calling the API, stream responses so users see text immediately, and add fallback providers for outages, as RAG.NextUpgrad does with multi-provider fallback.

Does Gemini AI use water?

Yes, indirectly. Data centres that run Gemini use water for cooling. In 2025, Google reported that a median Gemini Apps text prompt used about 0.26 millilitres of water, roughly five drops, along with a small amount of energy.

That figure covers typical text prompts; image and video generation and long-context or reasoning tasks use more. At global scale, totals add up, which is why companies report on efficiency, renewable energy and water replenishment. Measurement methods differ across companies, so compare figures carefully. You can reduce your own footprint by choosing lighter models for simple tasks.

How do I use Gemini as a photo editor?

Upload a photo in the Gemini app and describe the edit in plain language, such as "remove the background clutter" or "change the shirt to blue", and Gemini's image model edits it while keeping the rest consistent. You can refine with follow-up instructions.

Tips:

  • Make one change at a time for precise control.
  • Describe what to keep: "keep the face and pose unchanged".
  • Use reference images for style or objects.
  • Download the result in full resolution.

Edited images include SynthID watermarks marking AI involvement. Only edit photos you have rights to, and never create misleading images of real people.
