Key takeaways

  • Gemini is Google's multimodal model family and assistant, trained on text, code, images, audio and video.
  • Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on phones and, through Gemini for Home, on Nest speakers and displays.
  • Gemini in Messages and Workspace connections add convenience; review privacy settings before connecting data.
  • AI Mode lives in Google Search and runs on a custom Gemini model, not inside the Gemini app.
  • Start with concrete tasks in the Gemini app, then explore Deep Research, Gems and AI Studio.

Gemini is Google's family of multimodal AI models and the assistant app built on them, which understands text, images, audio, video and code and is now built into Android, Google Home, Messages, Workspace, Photos and Search. I build AI products on several model providers, so this page explains how Gemini works, how it compares with Google Assistant, whether to use it on Google Home, in Messages and with Workspace, which model powers AI Mode, Gemini in Photos, and how to get started.

How does Gemini work?

Gemini models are large transformer-based neural networks trained on vast amounts of text, code, images, audio and video, so they can understand and generate across these formats. The Gemini app sends your prompt to these models, which predict a response token by token.

Around the core model, Google adds instruction tuning and safety training, tools such as Google Search for grounding, connected apps such as Gmail, Maps or YouTube, and memory of your preferences if enabled. Different model sizes serve different needs: Flash models for speed, Pro models for harder reasoning, and on-device Nano models in some phones. Like all language models, Gemini can make mistakes, so verify important facts, especially numbers, dates and claims without sources.

Gemini vs Google Assistant: what is the difference?

Google Assistant was built for quick commands: timers, smart home control, calls and simple answers. Gemini is a generative AI assistant that holds conversations, writes, analyses images and documents, and reasons through complex requests, while increasingly handling Assistant's tasks too.

Google has been replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones, and on smart speakers and displays through Gemini for Home. Gemini is more capable for open-ended help, such as planning a trip or summarising an email thread, and supports natural follow-up questions. Some routine actions were initially slower or missing in Gemini, but coverage has grown. Gemini also relies more on cloud processing, so review privacy settings when you switch.

Should you use Gemini or Google Assistant?

For most people, Gemini is now the better choice, because it handles both everyday commands and complex questions, and Google is moving its devices to Gemini. If you rely on a specific Assistant routine that Gemini does not yet support, keep Assistant for now.

Try Gemini for a week with your common tasks: alarms, reminders, smart home control, messages, navigation and questions. Check that routines, voice match and device controls work as before. On Android, you can usually choose the default assistant in settings while both remain available. Consider privacy: Gemini conversations may be stored and reviewed according to your activity settings, so adjust Gemini Apps Activity if you prefer shorter retention. The choice will narrow as Assistant is phased out.

When does Gemini come to Google Home?

Google announced Gemini for Home in October 2025, replacing Google Assistant on Nest speakers and displays, with early access starting in the United States and a wider rollout over the following months. Availability depends on your country, language and device.

Gemini for Home brings natural conversation to smart speakers, more flexible smart home commands, such as turning off all the lights except the kitchen, and camera features like summaries of events on supported Nest cameras, some of which require a subscription. Check the Google Home app for an upgrade prompt and current eligibility. Older devices may get a reduced feature set. If you rely on routines, review them after the switch to confirm they still run correctly.

Should you use Gemini in Google Messages?

Use it if you want quick help drafting replies, brainstorming or asking questions without leaving the Messages app. Gemini in Messages works as a separate chat with Gemini; it does not read your other conversations unless you share content with it.

It is convenient for rewriting a message more politely, translating text, or organising outings with friends. Treat it like any AI chat: avoid sharing sensitive personal information, passwords or private details about others. Conversations with Gemini in Messages are handled under your Gemini Apps Activity settings, so review them in your Google account. If you prefer a clean messaging app, you can ignore the Gemini chat, and it will not affect your normal messaging.

Should you connect Gemini to Google Workspace?

Connect it if you want Gemini to search and summarise your Gmail, Drive and Docs, such as finding a document or summarising an email thread. It saves time, but it gives the assistant access to personal and work data, so weigh convenience against privacy.

Also asked as: should i connect gemini to google workspace

For work or school accounts, your administrator controls whether Gemini can access Workspace data, and enterprise terms typically restrict how data is used. For personal accounts, review the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub to understand how connected content and activity are handled, and turn off connections for apps you do not want included. Start with one app, such as Drive, test usefulness, and verify answers against the original documents, since summaries can miss details or misread context.

Which Gemini model does Google AI Mode use?

Google's AI Mode in Search runs on a custom version of Google's latest Gemini models, adapted for search with query fan-out, which breaks a question into many sub-searches and combines the results into one answer with links.

Also asked as: which gemini model does google ai mode uses

When AI Mode launched widely in 2025, Google said it used a custom version of Gemini 2.5, and it has since upgraded AI Mode as newer Gemini models arrived. Because the model is customised for Search, its behaviour differs from the Gemini app even when the underlying generation is similar. For developers, the closest public equivalent is grounding Gemini API calls with Google Search, which returns answers with source citations.

Why does Google AI Mode not appear in Gemini?

AI Mode is a feature of Google Search, not of the Gemini app, so you will not find it inside Gemini. Open it from the AI Mode tab or button in Google Search on the web or in the Google app.

If AI Mode does not appear in Search either, it may not be available in your country, language or account type yet, or it may be disabled for work or school accounts by administrators. Update the Google app, sign in with a personal account, and check Search Labs if you are in an early-access region. The Gemini app offers its own web-grounded answers and Deep Research, which serve similar needs from inside Gemini.

How does Gemini in Google Photos work?

Google Photos uses Gemini for Ask Photos, which lets you search your library with natural questions, such as what did we eat on our beach trip, and for editing features that understand requests like remove the person in the background.

Also asked as: how does gemini photos work

Ask Photos combines Gemini's language understanding with Photos' existing image analysis: faces you have labelled, locations, dates and recognised objects. It can answer questions that need reasoning across photos, like when your child learned to swim, and it shows the matching photos as evidence. Google has said it does not train generative AI products outside Photos on your personal Photos data, and some features are limited to certain countries and languages, so check availability in your settings.

How do you get started with Gemini?

Open gemini.google.com or the Gemini app, sign in with your Google account, and start with a concrete task: summarise a document, plan a study schedule, explain code or analyse a photo. Use follow-up questions to refine answers rather than writing one long prompt.

Next, explore features: upload files and images; use Deep Research for reports with sources; create Gems, custom assistants with saved instructions; connect apps such as Gmail or Drive if you want personal context; and try Canvas for editing documents and code. For developers, Google AI Studio offers free experimentation with Gemini models and an API key for building apps. Google's own learning resources and Grow with Google courses cover practical everyday use.
