How to get an AI internship as a student in India: where to apply, the portfolio that gets replies, cold emails that work, and what to do when your college has no placements

A practical route to a first AI or GenAI internship for students at any college: which companies actually hire interns for AI work, how to build the three projects that get replies, how to write a cold email founders answer, how to use hackathons and communities as the pipeline, remote and freelance options, and how to turn an internship into a job. From someone who found work without a placement cell.

Key takeaways

  • Startups, agencies and small product companies hire AI interns on portfolios; large companies hire through campus filters. Target the first group directly.
  • Three live projects with READMEs and demo videos get more replies than any number of certificates.
  • A cold email is five sentences: who you are, one thing about their product, one link to a matching project, one specific ask, a thank-you.
  • Hackathons, communities and open source are the pipeline when your college has no placement cell, and often when it does.
  • Treat the internship as an audition: ship visibly, write things down, ask for the conversion conversation a month before it ends.

How do I get an AI internship as a student?

Build three live projects that look like the work, put them on a GitHub profile a recruiter can read in two minutes, and apply where AI work is visible: startups, agencies and small product companies, through their websites, founders' inboxes and the events they sponsor. Large companies mostly hire interns through campus programmes with degree and college filters; do not spend your energy fighting that filter in year two. My own first work came through a community I built and hackathons I entered, not through a placement cell, and that route is open to every student reading this.

Which companies actually hire AI interns?

Three kinds, in the order you should approach them. Startups and small product companies shipping AI features: they need hands, hire on portfolios, and a founder reads the inbox. Agencies and studios building AI for clients, such as the one I lead engineering for: varied projects, real deadlines, fast learning. Research labs and large companies: structured programmes, degree filters, campus channels, worth applying to but not worth waiting on. Remote-first companies abroad hire Indian students on portfolios and time-zone overlap.

Where should I look for AI internships?

Internshala and Unstop for volume in India, filtered hard for roles that mention specific work, RAG, LLM, computer vision, not "AI intern" alone [1][4]. Wellfound for startups, including remote [2]. LinkedIn Jobs with alerts for your city plus the stack [3]. Google Summer of Code for paid open-source work with mentors [5]. Devfolio and other hackathon platforms, because sponsors recruit from the teams they watch [6]. And the inboxes of founders whose products you have used, which is where the best internships I know of came from.

What projects get internship replies?

Three, each live at a URL with a README and a two-minute demo video. A RAG assistant over a real document set with measured retrieval recall. A small fine-tuned model with a base-versus-tuned comparison. One useful web app that a real person uses, even if that person is your club. Together they prove retrieval, training, evaluation and shipping. Match one of them to each company you write to; the reply rate on a matched project is many times that of a generic resume.

The projects that get interviews, with reasons, are written up separately [10], and the GitHub profile that makes them findable is its own note [12].

How do I write a cold email for an internship?

Five sentences. Who you are and what you are studying, one line. One specific thing about their product or a recent post of theirs, which proves you looked. One link to a project of yours that resembles their work, with a one-line result. One specific ask: a four-to-eight-week internship on a named area, paid or unpaid stated plainly, remote or on-site. A thank-you. Under 120 words, from a real email address, with a subject line that names the company and the ask. Follow up once after a week.

Subject: GenAI internship, RAG work, VSICS Kanpur student

Hi Neha,

I'm Aarav, second-year BCA at VSICS Kanpur. I used your document-search
product last month and noticed it returns whole pages rather than passages.

I built a RAG assistant over my college's syllabus with hybrid retrieval and
measured recall@10 of 0.9 on 40 real questions: <link to live demo and repo>.

Would you consider a six-week remote internship on retrieval quality this
summer? Paid or unpaid, I'd like to know which upfront.

Thank you for reading.

Every line does a job. My longer notes on cold outreach, including what got replies and what did not, are on the portfolio [8].

What if my college has no placement cell or AI companies do not visit?

Then you are in my situation, and the route is the same one I took. Build the three projects. Start or join a community and teach in it, because communities are where referrals come from. Enter hackathons, in person when you can, because sponsors and judges hire. Contribute to an open-source project a target company uses. Post one build a week where engineers read. Apply remotely with the portfolio. The placement cell is one channel; these are five, and they work from any campus.

Should I take an unpaid internship, freelance instead, or start something?

Take an unpaid internship only if the work is real, the mentor is real and it is short; otherwise freelance for small clients, which pays and teaches delivery, or build a product for a community you belong to. In year two I chose client work through the agency route and it taught more than any internship offer I had, but it is not the right answer for everyone. The decision framework is written up separately [9].

How do I get a remote AI internship?

Portfolio first, writing second. Remote teams cannot see your college and do not care; they see your GitHub, your README and how clearly you write in email. Target companies that already hire remotely, contribute to their open-source tools, apply with a matching project, and be explicit about your time-zone overlap, which for Europe is India's structural advantage. Practise asynchronous communication by writing good READMEs and posts, because that is the interview.

How do I convert an internship into a job?

Ship something visible in the first two weeks. Write a short weekly note of what you did and what you learned, and send it to your mentor. Take the unglamorous tasks and finish them completely. Ask questions in public channels so the team sees you learning. A month before the end, ask directly: what would it take to continue, and in what role? Most conversions happen because the intern asked, not because the company remembered.

What mistakes do students make applying for AI internships?

Sending a resume with no links. Listing courses instead of projects. Applying only to large companies through portals. Generic emails to fifty founders. Projects that are tutorial clones with the name changed. A GitHub with one commit per project. Giving up after ten applications, when the pipeline needs a hundred. Waiting for the placement cell. Every one of these has a fix on this page.
