Key takeaways

  • LangChain officially supports Python and JavaScript; Java teams use LangChain4j or Spring AI.
  • Claude, Gemini and Ollama have official integration packages; OpenRouter works through ChatOpenAI.
  • You do not strictly need LangChain, but it speeds integrations, RAG and agent patterns.
  • LangChain, Inc. is a private US company, and its core libraries remain MIT-licensed.
  • Learn LangChain through chains, RAG, LangGraph agents and LangSmith evaluation, project by project.

LangChain officially supports Python and JavaScript or TypeScript, and integrates with most model providers, including Claude, Gemini, Ollama and OpenRouter-style OpenAI-compatible endpoints; Java developers use the separate LangChain4j project. I build RAG systems in Python with FastAPI, so this page covers LangChain's languages, Java, Claude, Gemini, Ollama and OpenRouter support, why you might need LangChain, where the company is based, whether it might go public, and a roadmap to learn it.

What languages does LangChain support?

LangChain officially supports Python and JavaScript or TypeScript, with separate libraries for each. Community projects bring similar ideas to other languages, such as LangChain4j for Java and LangChainGo for Go.

The Python version usually receives new integrations first and has the largest community, while LangChain.js is popular for Next.js and serverless apps. LangGraph and LangSmith also support both official languages. Community ports are independent projects with their own maintainers, APIs and release schedules, so check their documentation and activity before adopting them. For other languages, calling provider SDKs directly or using lightweight libraries is often simpler than seeking a full LangChain equivalent.

Does LangChain support Java?

Not officially. LangChain's official libraries are Python and JavaScript. Java developers commonly use LangChain4j, an independent open-source library inspired by LangChain, or Spring AI from the Spring team.

LangChain4j offers chat model integrations, embedding stores, RAG pipelines, tools and agents, with integrations for Spring Boot and Quarkus. Spring AI provides similar abstractions in Spring's style, with model clients, vector store support and structured output. Both support major providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Ollama. Choose LangChain4j for LangChain-like patterns, Spring AI if your stack is already Spring, and direct provider SDKs for minimal dependencies. Concepts from Python tutorials transfer directly.

Does LangChain support Claude?

Yes. The langchain-anthropic package provides ChatAnthropic for Claude models, supporting streaming, tool calling, structured output, images and other Claude features, usable in chains and LangGraph agents.

Install langchain-anthropic, set the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable, and create ChatAnthropic with a Claude model name. Because LangChain uses a common chat model interface, you can swap Claude with other providers by changing one line, which helps comparisons and fallbacks. Claude is also available through AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI integrations. For newly released Claude features, check whether the integration supports them, or call the Anthropic SDK directly inside your workflow. Recent versions expose options such as prompt caching; check the docs.

Can you use LangChain with Gemini?

Yes. Use the langchain-google-genai package with ChatGoogleGenerativeAI for the Gemini API through Google AI Studio keys, or langchain-google-vertexai with ChatVertexAI for Gemini on Google Cloud's Vertex AI.

Both support streaming, tool calling, structured output and multimodal inputs such as images. Gemini embedding models are also available for RAG through the same packages. Choose the Gemini API for quick prototyping with an API key, and Vertex AI for enterprise features like IAM, regions and data governance. As with other providers, model names change with new releases, so check the integration documentation for current model identifiers and supported parameters. Multimodal prompts can mix text and images in one message.

Does LangChain support Ollama?

Yes. The langchain-ollama package provides ChatOllama for chat models and OllamaEmbeddings for local embeddings, connecting to a local Ollama server, by default on port 11434.

This lets you build fully local RAG and agent applications: pull a model with Ollama, create ChatOllama with its name, and combine it with a local vector store such as FAISS or Chroma. Tool calling works with Ollama models that support it, such as recent Llama, Qwen and Mistral variants, though reliability is lower than with frontier models. Set the num_ctx parameter to control context length and memory. Local setups keep data private and work offline, which suits sensitive documents and development without API costs.

Does LangChain support OpenRouter?

Yes, through OpenRouter's OpenAI-compatible API. Use ChatOpenAI from langchain-openai with the base URL set to OpenRouter's endpoint, your OpenRouter API key, and a model name in OpenRouter's provider/model format.

OpenRouter routes requests to many providers through one key, which helps when comparing models or adding fallbacks. Some features vary by underlying model, such as tool calling or structured output, so test each model you plan to use. Community integration packages may also exist; check current documentation before adopting one. Mind data policies: requests pass through OpenRouter and then the chosen provider, so review both privacy terms for sensitive applications. Track usage on OpenRouter's dashboard to monitor spending across models.

Why do we need LangChain?

You do not strictly need it; you can build LLM apps with provider SDKs alone. LangChain helps when you want ready integrations, standard interfaces across providers, and patterns for RAG, tools and agents without writing all the glue code.

It saves time on document loading, text splitting, vector store connections, retrievers and output parsing, and LangGraph adds control for complex agents with state and human approval. LangSmith adds tracing and evaluation. The trade-off is another dependency with abstractions to learn and versions to manage. Use it where it clearly accelerates your work, and plain code where you need maximum transparency and minimal dependencies.

Where is LangChain headquartered?

LangChain, Inc. is headquartered in the United States, with a team that works across locations. The company was founded by Harrison Chase and Ankush Gola after the open-source LangChain project launched in October 2022.

Also asked as: where is langchain headquarters

For developers, the location matters less than the project's online presence: documentation, GitHub repositories, LangChain Academy courses, community forums and Slack. The company builds LangChain, LangGraph and the commercial LangSmith platform, and offers enterprise options, including deployment choices for teams with data residency requirements. Check the official website for current company details, careers and contact information, since growing startups often change offices and organisation. LangChain Academy also offers free courses for learning the stack.

Will LangChain go public?

LangChain, Inc. is a privately held, venture-backed company, and it has not announced plans for an initial public offering. Any IPO would depend on its growth, market conditions and investors' plans.

For developers, company finances matter mainly for the long-term stability of the open-source projects and commercial products. The core libraries are open source under the MIT licence, so the code remains available regardless of company outcomes, while LangSmith and hosted platform features depend on the company. Follow official announcements for reliable news rather than speculation, and design applications so critical logic does not depend on any single vendor's continued existence. Treat rumours on social media with caution.

What is a roadmap to learn LangChain?

Learn Python and LLM API basics first, then LangChain's core: prompts, chat models, output parsers and runnables. Next, build RAG with loaders, splitters, embeddings and vector stores, then agents with tools in LangGraph, then evaluation with LangSmith.

A project-based path: week one, a simple chain with structured output; week two, a RAG app over your documents with citations; week three, a LangGraph agent with two tools and memory; week four, tracing, evaluation and deployment with FastAPI. LangChain Academy offers free courses, and roadmap.sh lists AI engineering topics around it. Learn the underlying concepts too, so you can work without the framework when needed.
