Key takeaways

  • Whisper is OpenAI's open-source speech recognition model for transcription, translation and timestamps.
  • Install it with pip and ffmpeg, or use faster-whisper or whisper.cpp for speed.
  • The API accepts M4A and other formats, while local Whisper reads anything ffmpeg decodes.
  • Accuracy is high for major languages, but hallucinations during silence need human review.
  • Local Whisper works offline, and HIPAA compliance depends on your deployment and agreements.

Whisper is OpenAI's speech recognition model, released as open source in 2022, which transcribes and translates speech in many languages. You can run it locally on your own hardware or call it through OpenAI's API. My OCR & Speech Workspace includes live speech-to-text alongside page-batched OCR, so this page covers what Whisper is, how it works, installing it, the API, accuracy, offline use, Mac setup, M4A support, transcription time and HIPAA compliance.

What is OpenAI Whisper AI?

Whisper is an automatic speech recognition model from OpenAI, released open source under the MIT license in September 2022. It transcribes speech in around 99 languages, translates speech into English, and adds timestamps.

OpenAI trained it on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio collected from the web, which makes it robust to accents, background noise and technical vocabulary compared with many earlier systems. It comes in several sizes, from tiny to large, plus a faster turbo version, trading speed for accuracy. People use it to transcribe meetings, lectures, podcasts, interviews and videos, create subtitles, and power voice interfaces. It also runs inside many apps and libraries, such as faster-whisper and whisper.cpp, which optimise it for different hardware.

How does OpenAI Whisper work?

Whisper converts audio into 30-second log-Mel spectrogram segments, encodes them with a Transformer encoder, and a decoder generates text tokens, guided by special tokens that select the language, the task, such as transcription or translation, and timestamps.

This encoder-decoder design, described in the paper by Radford and colleagues, lets one model handle language identification, transcription, translation and timing. Longer audio is processed in consecutive windows, with previous text used as context. Because it was trained on weakly supervised web data, Whisper generalises well but can sometimes generate fluent text that was never spoken, especially during silence or noise. Voice activity detection, which removes silent parts before transcription, and careful decoding settings reduce these errors in practice.

How do you install Whisper AI?

Install Python and ffmpeg, then run pip install with the openai-whisper package. After installing, transcribe a file from the terminal with the whisper command, choosing a model such as turbo or small with the model flag.

ffmpeg is required to read audio formats; install it through your system package manager, Homebrew on macOS, or a package manager such as Chocolatey or Scoop on Windows. A GPU with CUDA speeds things up greatly, so install the CUDA build of PyTorch if you have an NVIDIA card. Models download automatically on first use. For faster transcription with less memory, consider faster-whisper, which reimplements Whisper with CTranslate2, or whisper.cpp, a lightweight C++ version that runs well on CPUs and laptops.

How do you use the Whisper AI API?

Create an OpenAI API key, then send an audio file to the audio transcriptions endpoint with the whisper-1 model, using the official Python or Node SDK. The response returns text, and you can request formats such as JSON, SRT or VTT subtitles.

Use the translations endpoint to convert speech in other languages into English text. Files must be under the upload size limit, so split long recordings into chunks first. You can pass a prompt with expected terms or names to improve the spelling of specialised vocabulary. OpenAI also offers newer transcription models, such as GPT-4o-based transcribers, which may give better accuracy for some audio. The API is convenient when you do not want to manage GPUs, but it sends audio to OpenAI, so check data policies for sensitive recordings.

How accurate is Whisper AI?

Whisper is highly accurate for clear English and many major languages, with lower word error rates on noisy, accented speech than many earlier systems. Accuracy drops for low-resource languages, overlapping speakers, poor microphones and very specialised terms.

Larger models are more accurate, and OpenAI publishes word error rates by language, showing wide variation. A known weakness is hallucination: a 2024 study by Koenecke and colleagues found that Whisper occasionally produced text not present in the audio, sometimes including harmful content, often during pauses. For important uses, such as medical or legal transcripts, keep humans reviewing outputs, use voice activity detection, and test on your own recordings. Speaker labelling is not built in, so add a diarisation tool such as pyannote when needed.

Does Whisper AI work offline?

Yes. The open-source Whisper model runs entirely on your own computer once the model weights are downloaded, with no internet connection needed, which keeps audio private. The OpenAI API version, by contrast, requires internet access.

Offline use suits sensitive recordings, field work and places with poor connectivity. Choose a model size your hardware can handle: tiny and base run on almost any laptop, while large models need a strong GPU for reasonable speed. whisper.cpp and faster-whisper make offline transcription practical on CPUs and Apple Silicon. Desktop apps built on Whisper, such as MacWhisper on macOS, offer offline transcription with a graphical interface. Make sure ffmpeg and the model files are installed before going offline, since first runs download weights.

How do you use Whisper AI on a Mac?

On a Mac, install Homebrew, then ffmpeg and Python, and install openai-whisper with pip. For better performance on Apple Silicon, use whisper.cpp or MLX Whisper, which take advantage of the Mac's GPU and unified memory.

Also asked as: how to use whisper ai on mac

whisper.cpp supports Metal acceleration and Core ML, giving fast transcription even with larger models on M-series chips. MLX Whisper runs on Apple's MLX framework and is easy to install with pip. If you prefer no command line, apps such as MacWhisper provide drag-and-drop transcription built on Whisper. Test the turbo model first, which balances speed and accuracy well. For long recordings, keep your Mac plugged in and avoid sleep settings that interrupt processing. Export results as text or subtitle files directly.

Does Whisper AI support M4A?

Yes. The OpenAI API accepts M4A files along with MP3, MP4, MPEG, MPGA, WAV and WebM. The open-source version supports M4A and nearly any other format that ffmpeg can decode.

Locally, Whisper calls ffmpeg to convert input audio to the format the model needs, so M4A recordings from iPhones and voice memo apps work directly. If you get decoding errors, check that ffmpeg is installed and on your system path. For the API, large M4A files must stay under the upload size limit, so split long recordings or compress them. Converting to mono and a lower bitrate reduces file size without much loss in transcription accuracy, since speech needs far less quality than music.

How long does Whisper AI take?

It depends on model size, hardware and audio length. On a modern GPU, larger models can transcribe faster than real time, while running a large model on a laptop CPU can take longer than the recording itself.

The turbo model was designed to be much faster than large with only a small accuracy loss, and faster-whisper's maintainers report substantial speedups over the original implementation with similar accuracy. Small and base models run quickly even on CPUs but make more errors. Batching, half precision on GPUs, voice activity detection that skips silence, and quantised models all reduce time. The OpenAI API usually returns transcripts in seconds to minutes depending on length. Benchmark a few minutes of your own audio before processing large archives.

Is Whisper AI HIPAA compliant?

Whisper itself is a model, not a service, so compliance depends on how you deploy it. Running open-source Whisper on infrastructure you control can support HIPAA compliance if your environment meets the required safeguards.

For the API, OpenAI states that it can sign a Business Associate Agreement with eligible customers, which is required before sending protected health information to a vendor in the United States. Without one, do not send patient audio to the API. Whatever the setup, apply access controls, encryption, audit logs and retention limits, and review transcripts for hallucinated content before they enter medical records. Consult your compliance team or legal adviser, since HIPAA obligations cover your whole workflow, not just the transcription model.
