Key takeaways

  • RAG is a technique for grounding answers, while MCP is a protocol for connecting tools and data.
  • Vector search is one retrieval method, and RAG adds generation with citations on top.
  • Long context suits small collections, while RAG scales to large, changing knowledge.
  • Agentic RAG plans and repeats retrieval, at higher cost than single-pass RAG.
  • GraphRAG uses graphs built from documents to answer relationship and global questions.

RAG, retrieval-augmented generation, gives a language model relevant information at question time so it answers from evidence. Many related terms, from MCP to agentic RAG and GraphRAG, describe different layers or variations. I built RAG.NextUpgrad with hybrid retrieval, reranking, cited streaming and a confidence gate, so this page untangles RAG versus MCP, pipelines, vector search, long context, agentic search and RAG, chatbots, GraphRAG and knowledge graphs, and RAG-Sequence versus RAG-Token.

What is the difference between RAG and MCP?

RAG is a technique: retrieve relevant information and give it to a model so it answers from evidence. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data sources through servers.

They operate at different layers and work well together. An MCP server can expose a search tool over your documents, which an assistant calls to perform RAG. MCP also connects models to actions, such as creating tickets or querying databases, which go beyond retrieval. Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024, and it has since been adopted across many AI tools. Think of RAG as what you do with information, and MCP as how tools plug in.

What is the difference between RAG and a RAG pipeline?

RAG is the general idea of augmenting generation with retrieved information. A RAG pipeline is a concrete implementation: the sequence of steps and components that ingest documents, retrieve passages and produce grounded answers.

A typical pipeline includes document loading, cleaning, chunking, embedding, indexing, query processing, hybrid retrieval, reranking, prompt assembly, generation with citations and evaluation. Each step involves design choices that strongly affect quality. RAG.NextUpgrad's pipeline combines dense retrieval with BM25 through reciprocal rank fusion, reranks the results, streams cited answers and declines through a confidence gate when evidence is weak. Two systems both called RAG can perform very differently because their pipelines differ.

What is the difference between vector search and RAG?

Vector search finds items whose embeddings are closest to a query's embedding. RAG uses retrieval, often including vector search, to supply context that a language model then uses to generate an answer.

Vector search alone returns a ranked list of passages or items, like a search engine. RAG adds generation: it turns those passages into a synthesised answer with citations. RAG's retrieval step need not be vector-based; keyword search, SQL or hybrid methods often work better for exact terms. Semantic search and vector databases are building blocks, while RAG is the full question-answering system that combines retrieval with a model's language abilities.

What is the difference between RAG and a large context window?

A large context window lets you place whole documents directly in the prompt. RAG retrieves only the most relevant passages. Long context is simpler for small collections, while RAG scales to large, changing knowledge bases at lower cost.

Also asked as: difference between rag and context window

Long-context prompts cost more per question, increase latency and can suffer from models overlooking information in the middle, as the lost-in-the-middle study by Liu and colleagues found. RAG keeps prompts small and focused, supports access control per document and updates instantly when content changes. Combined approaches work well: retrieve relevant documents, then include larger sections thanks to long context. Test both on your questions, comparing accuracy, latency and cost.

Classic RAG retrieves once from a fixed index using the user's question. Agentic search lets a model decide what to search, run multiple queries with tools such as web search, file search or grep, read results and search again until satisfied.

Agentic search handles complex, multi-step questions and sources that are not pre-indexed, such as codebases or the live web, which is why coding agents often search files directly. It costs more tokens and time, and can wander without good limits. Classic RAG is faster, cheaper and more predictable for well-defined knowledge bases. Many systems combine them: a fast retrieval first, with agentic follow-up searches when the first pass is insufficient.

What is the difference between naive RAG and agentic RAG?

Naive RAG embeds the question, retrieves the top chunks once and generates an answer. Agentic RAG lets the model plan retrieval: rewrite queries, choose sources, retrieve multiple times, check whether evidence suffices and verify its answer.

Naive RAG fails on multi-hop questions, vague queries and questions spanning several sources. Agentic RAG handles these by decomposing questions, routing to the right index or tool, and iterating, using patterns such as self-reflection and corrective retrieval. The cost is higher latency, more tokens and harder evaluation. A middle ground adds query rewriting, hybrid search, reranking and a confidence gate, as in RAG.NextUpgrad, before reaching for full agentic loops.

What is the difference between RAG and a chatbot?

A chatbot is a conversational interface. RAG is a technique that can power a chatbot by retrieving relevant information before each answer. Many chatbots use RAG; others rely only on the model's training or scripted responses.

Also asked as: what is the difference between rag and chatbot

A chatbot without RAG answers from what the model learned during training, risking outdated or invented information about your specific organisation. A RAG chatbot grounds answers in your documents, citing sources and staying current as content changes. RAG can also power non-chat interfaces, such as search results with generated summaries or document question answering. When evaluating a chatbot product, ask whether it retrieves from your data, how it cites sources and what it does when evidence is missing.

What is the difference between GraphRAG and a knowledge graph?

A knowledge graph is a data structure storing entities and their relationships. GraphRAG is a retrieval technique that uses a graph, often built automatically from documents by an LLM, to retrieve connected information for answering questions.

Also asked as: difference between graph rag and knowledge graph

Microsoft's GraphRAG approach extracts entities and relationships from documents, clusters them into communities, and generates summaries that help answer broad questions about a whole collection, which plain vector RAG handles poorly. Traditional knowledge graphs are often curated, with defined schemas, and queried directly. GraphRAG uses graphs as an index for language models. Building and updating graphs costs more than vector indexing, so use GraphRAG when questions depend on relationships or global summaries.

What is the difference between the RAG-Sequence and RAG-Token models?

Both come from the original 2020 RAG paper by Lewis and colleagues. RAG-Sequence uses the same retrieved document to generate the entire answer, while RAG-Token can draw on different retrieved documents for each generated token.

Also asked as: what is the difference between rag-sequence model and rag-token model

In RAG-Sequence, the model generates a full answer for each top document and combines them by their retrieval probabilities. RAG-Token combines documents at every token step, allowing answers that blend facts from several sources. The paper found each variant performed better on different tasks. Modern RAG systems rarely use these exact formulations; instead, they place several retrieved passages in a large language model's prompt, letting the model attend to all of them.

MCP vs agentic RAG: how do they relate?

They are complementary. Agentic RAG is a strategy where a model plans and performs retrieval across steps. MCP is a protocol that standardises how the model connects to tools, including retrieval tools, databases and APIs.

An agentic RAG system might use MCP servers for a document search, a SQL database and a web search, choosing among them per question. MCP reduces the custom integration work, since one server can serve many AI applications. Security still matters: MCP servers can expose sensitive data or actions, so apply permissions, authentication and logging. Design the retrieval strategy first, then use MCP to connect the sources it needs.
