Key takeaways

  • LLM stands for large language model: a neural network trained on huge amounts of text to understand and generate language.
  • Examples include GPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Mistral, Qwen and DeepSeek, in closed and open-weight forms.
  • Weights are the learned numbers inside the model; parameters is the count of those numbers.
  • A model card documents what a model is for, how it was trained and evaluated, its limits and its licence.
  • There is no single best LLM; choose by task, cost, speed, privacy and your own evaluation.

LLM stands for large language model: a neural network, usually a transformer, trained on very large amounts of text to predict the next token, which lets it understand and generate language, write code and reason through problems. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are apps built on LLMs. This page explains what LLMs are and how they produce answers, gives examples and types, discusses how to pick the best one, what they are used for, and what weights, parameters and model cards mean, which matters once you start using open models.

What does LLM mean in AI?

In AI, LLM means large language model: a model with billions of parameters trained on a huge text corpus to predict and generate text. "Large" refers to the model's size and its training data.

LLMs are a type of generative AI and a subset of deep learning. They power chat assistants, coding tools, search features, translation and document analysis. Many newer LLMs are multimodal, also accepting images, audio or video, but the name has stuck. When people say "the LLM" in a product discussion, they mean the model doing the generation, as opposed to the surrounding application with its tools, retrieval and interface.

What are LLM models?

LLM models are the specific trained models, such as a particular version of GPT, Claude, Gemini or Llama, that you call through an API or run locally. Each is a file of learned weights plus the code to run it, released in sizes and variants.

A single model family usually comes in several sizes, from small fast models to large capable ones, and in variants: a base model that only continues text, an instruction-tuned model that follows requests, and sometimes reasoning, coding or vision versions. Closed models, such as GPT, Claude and Gemini, are available through their companies' apps and APIs. Open-weight models, such as Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Gemma and DeepSeek, can be downloaded and run on your own hardware.

How do LLM models generate an answer?

At inference time, an LLM converts your prompt into tokens, processes them through its transformer layers, outputs a probability for every possible next token, picks one, appends it, and repeats until it finishes the answer.

Each step uses attention to relate the new token to everything before it, and a cache of earlier computations makes generation faster. Sampling settings such as temperature and top-p control how predictable the choices are. Reasoning models spend extra tokens thinking before the final answer. The model has no live connection to the internet or your files unless an application supplies them through tools or retrieval, which is why grounding with documents, as in retrieval-augmented generation, is essential for accurate, current answers.

What are some examples of LLM models?

Well-known LLM families include OpenAI's GPT models, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini and open Gemma models, Meta's Llama, Mistral's models, Alibaba's Qwen, DeepSeek's models and Microsoft's Phi.

By access:

  • Closed, via apps and APIs: GPT, Claude, Gemini.
  • Open weights, downloadable: Llama, Mistral, Qwen, Gemma, DeepSeek, Phi and OpenAI's open-weight releases.
  • Specialised: coding models, embedding models for search, and vision-language models.

New versions arrive every few months, so model names change quickly; families are more stable than version numbers. Hugging Face hosts thousands of open models and fine-tuned variants.

What are the different types of LLM models?

LLMs differ by training stage, purpose, access and architecture: base versus instruction-tuned, general versus specialised, closed versus open-weight, dense versus mixture-of-experts, and text-only versus multimodal.

Also asked as: what are different llm models

The distinctions that matter in practice:

  • Base vs instruct: base models continue text; instruct models follow requests and are what assistants use.
  • Reasoning models: trained to think step by step for harder problems, slower and more costly.
  • Coding models: tuned on code and tool use.
  • Embedding models: produce vectors for search rather than text.
  • Multimodal models: accept images, audio or video.
  • Small vs large: small models run on devices; large ones handle harder tasks.

Choose the type to match your task before choosing a brand.

What is the best LLM model?

There is no single best LLM. Frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google lead on hard reasoning and coding, open-weight models lead on privacy and control, and smaller models win on speed and cost. The best one is the one that performs best on your task within your constraints.

How to choose:

  • Define the task and a test set of twenty to fifty real examples.
  • Try two or three candidate models, including one smaller, cheaper one.
  • Measure accuracy, latency and cost per request.
  • Consider privacy, data residency and licence.

Public leaderboards, such as community rankings, give a broad signal but not an answer for your use case. Design your code so switching models is a configuration change, as with the multi-provider fallback in RAG.NextUpgrad.

What are LLM models primarily used for?

LLMs are mainly used for writing and editing, answering questions, summarising, translating, coding assistance, extracting structured data from documents, classification, conversational assistants, and as the reasoning engine in AI agents.

In products, the most valuable uses combine an LLM with your data and systems: customer support grounded in documentation, document processing with validation, coding agents that run tests, and research assistants that cite sources. LLMs are weaker at exact arithmetic, guaranteed factual accuracy without sources, and anything requiring up-to-date knowledge without retrieval. Good engineering puts the model where language understanding helps and uses deterministic code for the rest, which is how DocuLens AI pairs extraction by an LLM with deterministic compliance scoring.

What are LLM model weights?

Model weights are the learned numbers inside a neural network, set during training, that determine how inputs are transformed into outputs. An LLM's knowledge and abilities are encoded in its weights.

When a company "releases the weights", you can download the files, typically gigabytes in size, and run or fine-tune the model yourself. Formats include safetensors for frameworks such as PyTorch and Hugging Face Transformers, and GGUF for tools like llama.cpp and Ollama. Quantisation stores weights with fewer bits, such as 4-bit instead of 16-bit, to cut memory use. Fine-tuning with methods like LoRA trains small extra weight matrices instead of changing all weights, which is far cheaper.

What are LLM model parameters?

Parameters are the individual learned values in a model, mostly its weights, and the parameter count, such as 7 billion or 70 billion, measures model size. More parameters generally mean more capacity, but also more memory and slower inference.

Memory is roughly parameters multiplied by bytes per parameter: a 7B model needs about 14 GB at 16-bit precision and about 4 GB at 4-bit. Parameter count is not everything: training data quality, training method and architecture matter a lot, and well-trained small models can beat older large ones. Mixture-of-experts models have many total parameters but use only some for each token, so their active parameters determine speed. "Parameters" can also mean generation settings such as temperature, so check the context.

What are LLM model cards?

A model card is documentation published with a model that explains its intended uses, training data at a high level, evaluation results, known limitations, risks and licence. The idea comes from the 2018 paper "Model Cards for Model Reporting".

On Hugging Face, every model page shows its model card, usually a README with metadata. Read it before using a model: check the licence, especially for commercial use, the languages and tasks it supports, its context length, evaluation benchmarks, recommended prompt format and any safety notes. When you fine-tune and share a model, write a model card too: what you trained it for, on what data, how you evaluated it, and where it should not be used.
