Key takeaways

  • Projects, internships and interview skills, not the degree alone, get computer science jobs.
  • Demand remains strong overall, but entry-level competition has risen since 2022.
  • Computer science is not dying; easy entry is, and AI raises the bar for juniors.
  • In India, B.Tech takes four years and BCA three; after 10th, choose maths with CS or a diploma.
  • Computer science builds software and theory, while IT applies and manages technology.

Computer science remains one of the most popular degrees and career paths, but the job market has changed with layoffs, AI coding tools and higher expectations for entry-level candidates. I am a BCA student who leads a 14-member engineering team at SCULT INDIA and has mentored more than 200 students, so this page covers getting a computer science job, graduate outcomes, demand, pay, whether the field is dying, degree length, options after 10th, CS versus IT, difficulty and history.

How do you get a computer science job?

Build real skills and proof: strong programming fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, two or three substantial projects deployed online, internships, and a clear resume and GitHub profile. Then apply widely, use referrals and prepare for coding interviews.

Projects that solve real problems for real users stand out more than tutorial clones. Hackathons, open-source contributions and freelance work add experience and contacts; my first prizes at Changethon 2025 and other hackathons came from shipping working products under deadlines. Specialise in an area employers need, such as backend, cloud, data or AI, while keeping fundamentals strong. Use campus placements, job portals, LinkedIn and alumni referrals, and tailor each application. Practise interviews regularly and learn from rejections. Persistence matters, since early job searches often take months.

Do computer science majors get jobs?

Most do, but it takes more effort than a few years ago. Entry-level hiring tightened after 2022, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported unemployment for recent computer science graduates above the average for all recent graduates in 2025.

Graduates with internships, projects and strong interview skills still find roles, while those relying on the degree alone struggle more. Employers increasingly expect candidates to be productive quickly, including with AI coding tools. Outcomes vary by college, location, specialisation and economic cycle. Many graduates also find work outside traditional software companies, in banks, healthcare, government, manufacturing and startups, since nearly every sector needs software. Start building experience from the first year rather than waiting for final-year placements, and keep learning after you graduate.

Are computer science jobs in demand?

Yes, overall demand for software skills remains strong and is projected to grow, with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting much faster than average growth for software developers. Competition for entry-level roles is intense, though.

Demand has shifted toward AI and machine learning, data engineering, cloud and platform engineering, cybersecurity and roles that combine software with domain knowledge, such as healthcare or finance. In India, global capability centres and startups continue to hire engineers, alongside IT services companies. Routine coding tasks are increasingly assisted by AI, which raises the bar for juniors but also creates work building and maintaining AI systems. Track job postings in your target area to see which skills appear most often, and build those skills through projects you can show.

Do computer science jobs pay well?

Generally yes. Software and computing roles pay above the average for graduates in most countries, though pay varies widely with company, location, skills, specialisation and experience, and starting offers differ greatly between employers.

Product companies, well-funded startups and global capability centres usually pay more than many service companies at entry level, while specialised skills in AI, cloud, security and systems command premiums. Pay grows fastest with demonstrated impact, such as owning important systems or leading teams, rather than years alone. Remote work has opened access to international employers for some engineers. Compare total compensation, including bonuses and benefits, along with learning opportunities, since the right early role compounds over a career more than a slightly higher first offer.

Why do people say computer science is dying?

Computer science is not dying, but the job market changed. Tech layoffs since 2022, tougher entry-level hiring and AI tools that write code have led to headlines and social media posts claiming the field is finished.

Also asked as: why is computer science dying

In reality, software keeps spreading into every industry, and AI itself is a computer science field that needs engineers to build, evaluate, deploy and secure it. What is fading is easy entry: learning only syntax or finishing a bootcamp no longer guarantees a job. Strong fundamentals, problem solving, system design and the ability to work effectively with AI tools are more valuable than ever. Enrolment surged over the last decade, increasing competition. Choose computer science if you enjoy solving problems with software, not only because of past hiring booms.

How long is a computer science degree?

In India, a B.Tech in computer science takes four years, while a BCA or B.Sc in computer science takes three, with a four-year honours option under NEP 2020 at many universities. Master's programs such as MCA or M.Tech take two years.

Also asked as: how long computer science degree

In the US, a bachelor's degree in computer science usually takes four years, while in England most bachelor's degrees take three years and in Scotland four. Diploma programs in computer engineering after class 10 take about three years, with lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech. Online degrees and part-time programs may take longer but allow work alongside study. Whatever the length, the skills you build through projects and internships during the degree matter more than the duration itself, so plan how you will use each year.

Can you do computer science after 10th?

Yes. After class 10, you can choose science with mathematics and computer science in classes 11 and 12, or take a three-year polytechnic diploma in computer engineering, which allows lateral entry into the second year of B.Tech.

Both routes lead to computer science careers. The class 12 route keeps options open for B.Tech through entrance exams, or for BCA and B.Sc programs. The diploma route is more practical and can lead to jobs earlier, though some employers prefer degrees for higher roles. Commerce and arts students can still enter computing later through BCA, which often accepts students without physics and chemistry. Start learning programming, such as Python, during school; free online courses and small projects build a head start regardless of your chosen route.

Are computer science and IT the same?

Not exactly. Computer science focuses on theory and building software: algorithms, data structures, programming languages, operating systems and AI. Information technology focuses on applying and managing technology: networks, systems administration, databases, security and supporting users.

In India, B.Tech programs in CSE and IT share most subjects and lead to similar software jobs, with IT sometimes adding more networking and web technologies. Abroad, IT degrees are often more applied and less mathematical. Career paths overlap heavily: software developers, data engineers and cloud engineers come from both. Choose based on curriculum and college quality rather than the label. If you want research, AI or deep systems work, computer science provides a stronger theoretical base; if you prefer infrastructure and operations, IT may suit you better.

Why is computer science a hard major?

Computer science combines abstract mathematics, logical thinking and precise programming, with a heavy workload of assignments and projects. Bugs give constant feedback that something is wrong, and the field changes fast, so learning never really stops.

Courses such as discrete mathematics, algorithms, theory of computation and operating systems demand abstract reasoning that feels unfamiliar at first. Programming assignments take longer than expected, especially when debugging. Students who struggle often lack regular practice rather than ability. It becomes manageable with daily coding, working through problems with peers, asking questions early and building projects that make concepts concrete. Many students who find the first year hard grow comfortable by the second. Lean on mentors and seniors, since explanations from people a step ahead often click faster.

When was computer science invented?

Computer science grew from mathematics and engineering over two centuries: Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine in the 1830s, Ada Lovelace published the first algorithm for it in 1843, and Alan Turing formalised computation in 1936.

Also asked as: when computer science was invented

Electronic computers appeared in the 1940s, and programming languages such as Fortran followed in the 1950s. Computer science became an academic discipline in the 1960s, with Purdue University founding the first computer science department in the United States in 1962. Since then, the field has expanded through personal computers, the internet, mobile devices, cloud computing and today's AI systems. Knowing this history helps you see computer science as the study of computation and problem solving, not only programming, which is also why its fundamentals stay relevant as tools change.
