Generative AI feels new, but it builds on decades of research; it became mainstream only in late 2022, when ChatGPT and image generators reached millions of people. Related ideas, from agents to AI music, have their own longer histories. I build AI products and teach students how the field evolved, so this page covers how long generative AI has existed, when it went mainstream, its development history, agentic AI, OpenAI, vibe coding, AI art and music, AI in production and AI apps.

How long has generative AI existed?

Simple generative models existed for decades, from statistical text generators to neural networks producing text and images. Modern generative AI took shape from 2014, when generative adversarial networks appeared, and accelerated after the transformer architecture arrived in 2017.

Earlier milestones include Markov chain text generation described by Claude Shannon in 1948 and recurrent neural networks generating text in the 2010s. Variational autoencoders in 2013 and GANs in 2014 made realistic image generation possible. OpenAI's GPT models from 2018 showed that large transformers trained on text could write fluently. By 2022, diffusion models and chat interfaces brought these capabilities to everyday users. Each era expanded what machines could create.

How long has generative AI been mainstream?

Generative AI became mainstream in late 2022. Image generators such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion spread during 2022, and ChatGPT's launch on 30 November 2022 brought conversational AI to millions within weeks.

In 2023, generative features entered search engines, office software and phones, and businesses began adopting them widely. By 2024 and 2025, generative AI was built into products used daily by hundreds of millions of people, from writing assistants to coding tools and image editors. Adoption speed surprised even many researchers. Its mainstream era is therefore only a few years old, which explains why norms, regulations and best practices are still developing quickly.

How long has generative AI been in development?

Research behind generative AI spans more than seventy years, from early statistical language models to neural networks. The current wave builds on breakthroughs from 2014 to 2020: GANs, transformers, large-scale pretraining and diffusion models.

Key steps include word embeddings in 2013, sequence-to-sequence models in 2014, attention mechanisms in 2015, the transformer in 2017, GPT and BERT in 2018, GPT-3 in 2020 showing few-shot abilities, and diffusion models reaching high image quality by 2021. Reinforcement learning from human feedback, refined between 2017 and 2022, made models helpful conversational assistants. Hardware advances, especially GPUs, made scaling possible. Each advance built on earlier work, compounding progress.

How long has agentic AI been around?

Agents have been studied in AI since its early decades, but agentic AI built on language models emerged in 2022 and 2023, with research such as ReAct and projects such as AutoGPT. Mainstream agent products arrived from 2024.

Classic agents included planning systems, game-playing programs and reinforcement learning agents, such as those that mastered Go in 2016. Language models made general-purpose agents practical by understanding instructions and calling tools. Coding agents, browser agents and enterprise agents appeared in 2024 and 2025, including computer use, Claude Code and OpenAI's Operator. Agentic AI as a mainstream term is therefore only a few years old, though its foundations are decades older.

How long has OpenAI been around?

OpenAI was founded in December 2015 as a non-profit research organisation. It created a capped-profit company in 2019 and restructured its for-profit arm as a public benefit corporation in 2025, while the non-profit retained control.

Its early work covered reinforcement learning and robotics, before shifting focus to large language models with GPT in 2018. GPT-3 in 2020, DALL-E in 2021 and ChatGPT in 2022 made it one of the most influential AI companies. Partnerships, especially with Microsoft, funded large-scale training. Its governance changes drew wide public attention. OpenAI's history reflects the broader shift of AI from academic research to products used by hundreds of millions of people.

How long has vibe coding been around?

The term vibe coding was coined by Andrej Karpathy in February 2025 to describe building software by prompting AI and accepting its code without close review. The practice grew from AI coding assistants available since 2021.

GitHub Copilot launched as a preview in 2021, and chat-based coding with ChatGPT followed in late 2022. As models improved and agentic coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code and app builders appeared, non-programmers began creating working apps through conversation. The term spread rapidly in 2025 and was widely discussed in media and dictionaries. Vibe coding is new as a term, but its foundations are only a few years older.

How long has generative AI art been around?

Computer-generated art dates to the 1960s and 1970s, with programs such as Harold Cohen's AARON. Neural network art emerged with Google's DeepDream in 2015 and GAN-generated images from 2018, and text-to-image tools went mainstream in 2022.

OpenAI's DALL-E in 2021 showed images generated from text descriptions, followed in 2022 by DALL-E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, which made high-quality image generation widely accessible. Since then, image models have improved in realism, text rendering and editing. Artists also use these tools as creative instruments. Generative art has raised debates about copyright, artist consent and labelling, leading to lawsuits, licensing deals and provenance standards for AI-generated images.

How long has generative AI music been around?

Algorithmic music dates to the 1950s, with the Illiac Suite composed by computer in 1957, and David Cope's experiments in the 1980s. Neural music generation advanced with OpenAI's Jukebox in 2020, and text-to-song tools such as Suno and Udio spread in 2023 and 2024.

Google's MusicLM in 2023 generated music from text descriptions, and later tools created full songs with vocals from prompts. Record labels sued AI music companies in 2024 over training data, and licensing agreements followed as the industry adapted. Generative music is now used for backing tracks, prototyping and content creation. Questions about artist rights, attribution and authenticity remain central as the technology improves.

How long has AI been used in production systems?

AI has run in production for decades: expert systems in the 1980s configured computer orders at companies such as DEC, spam filters and recommendation engines spread in the late 1990s and 2000s, and deep learning entered products around 2012.

Speech recognition, image search, translation and fraud detection adopted deep learning in the 2010s, often invisibly; many users never noticed these systems were AI. Generative AI added a new wave of production uses from 2023, such as chat assistants, coding tools and document processing. Production AI requires monitoring, evaluation and governance, lessons learned through decades of earlier deployments. Today's AI engineers build on that history, as I do with products such as RAG.NextUpgrad.

How long have AI apps been around?

Consumer AI apps date back over a decade: Siri launched on iPhone in 2011, Google Now in 2012 and Amazon's Alexa in 2014. Generative AI apps, such as ChatGPT's mobile apps in 2023, started a new wave of AI-first applications.

Before assistants, AI powered apps behind the scenes, through recommendations, photo search and keyboard predictions. Since 2023, app stores have filled with chat assistants, image generators, AI tutors and productivity tools, and major apps added AI features. Building AI apps has become accessible to students, with APIs, open models and frameworks lowering barriers. The five NextUpgrad apps I shipped in 2026 reflect how quickly a small team can now build useful AI products.
