Is AI a good career in India? Roles, what hiring actually looks like, what fresher paths exist, and how to get in without an IIT tag

An honest answer for students and career-switchers asking whether AI is a good career in India: which roles exist (GenAI engineer, ML engineer, data scientist, AI product engineer, applied researcher), how hiring actually works for freshers, what companies test for, whether you need a degree from a top college, how remote and startup paths differ from campus placements, the realistic risks, and a plan for the first eighteen months. From a BCA student in Kanpur who became a GenAI engineer without a placement cell.

Key takeaways

  • AI is a good career in India if you build things. It is a poor career if you collect certificates. The distinction is the whole answer.
  • Most hiring for freshers is for engineers who can ship AI features, not for researchers; RAG, fine-tuning, evaluation and deployment are the skills tested.
  • A top-college tag helps with campus placements and little else. Remote roles, startups and referrals evaluate portfolios.
  • The risk is not that AI jobs vanish; it is that entry-level roles demand proof of shipped work earlier than other fields.
  • Eighteen months of weekly building and posting is a realistic path from zero to a first AI role.

Is AI a good career in India?

Yes, if you build things, and the qualifier matters more than the yes. Companies across India are adding AI features to products and hiring engineers who can ship them; the roles pay at or above general software roles at the same level, and the work is genuinely interesting. But entry-level AI hiring demands proof of shipped work earlier than most fields, and a stack of certificates without a deployed project does not get interviews. I got into GenAI work from a BCA programme in Kanpur without a placement cell by building and posting weekly, and that path is open to anyone willing to do the same [9].

This page is my honest answer to the question students ask me most at campus sessions, with the industry references that back it [1][2][3] and the paths I have watched work and fail. My roadmap for GenAI engineering in India is written up separately [4].

The question is never whether AI is a good career. It is whether you will be one of the people with something to show when the interview comes. Pranjul Rathour

What AI roles actually exist in India?

GenAI or AI engineer: builds features on top of models, RAG systems, agents, fine-tuning, evaluation, deployment; the most-hired role for freshers with projects. Machine learning engineer: trains and serves models, more infrastructure and data pipelines. Data scientist: analysis, experimentation, classical models, business communication. AI product engineer: full-stack developer who integrates AI well. Applied researcher or research engineer: papers and new methods, mostly requires a master's or PhD. Then MLOps, data engineering and annotation or evaluation roles around them. Most openings for freshers are in the first and fourth.

How does AI hiring actually work for freshers?

Campus placements at top colleges bring companies to you; everywhere else, hiring happens through referrals, cold outreach, hackathons, communities and remote applications, and it evaluates what you have built. The interview usually has a coding round, a project deep-dive where you defend your decisions, and a system-design or take-home task such as building a small RAG or extraction pipeline. The project deep-dive is where most candidates fail and where a real shipped project makes you pass [6][7].

Do I need an IIT, NIT or IIIT degree?

For campus placements at those colleges, the tag is the door. For everything else, it is a mild signal that a portfolio overrides. Remote companies, startups and most mid-size product firms evaluate the GitHub, the deployed demo and the interview, and referrals from communities and hackathons open the same doors a tag does [5][10]. I have watched BCA and tier-three B.Tech students get GenAI roles with strong projects and IIT students get rejected with none. The tag saves time; it does not substitute for work.

Do I need a master's or PhD for an AI career?

Not for engineering roles, which are most of the roles. GenAI engineers, ML engineers, AI product engineers and MLOps engineers are hired on demonstrated ability to build. A master's helps for research roles and for some ML engineer roles at large labs, and a PhD is effectively required for research scientist positions. If you want to build products, build products; if you want to publish papers, the degree path is the right one. Choose by what you want to do daily, not by what sounds impressive.

What skills do AI jobs in India test for?

Python, thoroughly. Working with model APIs and structured outputs. Retrieval-augmented generation: chunking, embeddings, hybrid search, reranking, evaluation. Fine-tuning basics with LoRA and when not to fine-tune. Evaluation: how you know it works. Deployment: an API, a container, a free-tier host, logging. Data handling and SQL. Git and a readable repository. Communication: explaining a technical decision to a non-technical person. Not tested for freshers in most roles: deriving backpropagation by hand, training models from scratch, or reciting paper titles.

What are the real risks of an AI career?

Entry-level roles are competitive and demand shipped proof early, so students who only study fall behind students who build. Tools change fast, so the specific framework you learn will be replaced; the skills that persist are evaluation, data handling and systems thinking. Hype produces bad job descriptions and some companies that do not know what they need. Some roles labelled AI are data entry or annotation. And AI tools make junior generalist coding cheaper, which raises the bar for what a junior must bring. None of these is a reason to avoid the field; each is a reason to build rather than collect certificates.

What does a first AI job pay in India?

Enough to be worth it, with wide variance by city, company type and role, and I will not invent numbers here. Startups and remote roles often pay above local service companies for the same skills; product companies pay above both for strong candidates. Compensation rises quickly in the first three years for engineers who ship. The practical advice: research current ranges on public sites for the specific role and city, and negotiate your first offer, because most freshers do not and leave money on the table [8].

Which path should I take: placement, remote, startup or freelance?

Campus placement if your college has good AI hiring; it is the easiest door. Remote roles at foreign startups if you can show shipped work and communicate well; they pay well and evaluate portfolios [5]. Indian startups if you want to learn fast and take ownership early. Freelance and building for local businesses if you want cash flow and real users while you look, which is what I did. Many people combine them: a freelance project becomes a portfolio piece becomes a remote offer.

What should my first eighteen months look like?

Months one to three: Python, one model API, one small deployed app. Months four to six: a RAG system over real documents, measured and deployed; start posting weekly. Months seven to nine: a vision or fine-tuning project with an evaluation; first hackathon. Months ten to twelve: an internship, freelance project or open-source contribution; second hackathon; polish the portfolio. Months thirteen to eighteen: apply widely, interview, iterate on feedback, and keep shipping. My full roadmap with the specific resources is on the portfolio [4].

Is AI a good career for non-CS students?

Yes for engineering roles if you learn to program properly, which takes months of daily practice, not weeks. Domain knowledge is an advantage: a pharmacy student building a prescription reader, a commerce student building an invoice extractor, a biology student building a lab-report assistant each has a project no CS student can match. The route is the same: Python, one API, one deployed project, weekly posts, communities. My sessions for non-CS audiences exist because this route works [7].

Where should I start?

Tonight: install Python, make one API call to a model, and put the script on GitHub with a README. This week: post what you built. Next month: a RAG system over documents you actually have. The career follows from the habit. For a career session at your college on getting into AI from anywhere in India, email pranjulrathour41@gmail.com or use pranjulrathour.scult.in/invite.
