Key takeaways

  • Modern text-to-speech uses AI, but older rule-based text-to-speech did not.
  • Conversion runs through normalisation, phonemes, prosody, acoustic modelling and a vocoder.
  • Whisper, Deepgram, AssemblyAI and cloud services lead speech to text, with local options too.
  • Realtime streaming transcription powers voice agents, live captions and meeting notes.
  • Most iPhone speech problems come from settings, permissions, voices or microphones.

Text-to-speech and speech-to-text are now powered by AI models that produce natural voices and accurate transcripts, often in real time. Using them well means understanding how conversion works, which tools fit, and how to fix common device problems. I built the OCR & Speech Workspace with live speech-to-text, so this page covers text-to-speech versus AI, the conversion process, code, the best transcription tools, realtime transcription, iPhone fixes, Kindle, energy use and Premiere Pro.

What is the difference between text to speech and AI?

Text-to-speech is a task: converting written text into spoken audio. AI is the broad field of building systems that perform tasks requiring intelligence. Modern text-to-speech uses AI, specifically neural networks, to produce natural-sounding voices.

Older text-to-speech systems used hand-written rules or stitched together recorded sound units, producing robotic or choppy speech without machine learning. Neural text-to-speech, from WaveNet onwards, learns pronunciation, rhythm and intonation from recordings, enabling expressive voices, many languages and voice cloning. So all modern AI voices are text-to-speech systems, but not all text-to-speech is AI. When people say AI voice, they usually mean neural text-to-speech, sometimes combined with a language model for conversation.

What does text to speech conversion involve?

Conversion involves normalising text, such as expanding numbers and abbreviations, converting words into phonemes, predicting prosody such as stress and pitch, generating an acoustic representation, and turning it into an audio waveform with a vocoder.

For example, a sentence containing a date, a number and an abbreviation must become spoken words with correct expansions, which depend on context and locale. Grapheme-to-phoneme models handle pronunciation, including names and borrowed words. Neural acoustic models predict spectrograms, and vocoders synthesise sound. Many modern systems combine these steps end to end. SSML markup lets developers control pauses, emphasis and pronunciation. Errors usually come from normalisation, such as reading chemical formulas or abbreviations oddly.

How do you convert a text string to speech in code?

In Python, pyttsx3 speaks a string offline using your operating system's voices, while cloud SDKs from OpenAI, Azure or Google return natural neural audio files. In browsers, JavaScript's Web Speech API speaks text with the speechSynthesis interface.

For offline neural quality, open-source engines such as Piper run locally and are fast enough for real-time use on modest hardware. Cloud APIs offer the most natural voices and many languages, but need network access and handle data externally. Save generated audio to files and cache repeated phrases to save time. For accessibility features in web apps, test voices on different browsers and devices, since available voices vary widely between platforms.

What are the best speech to text AI tools?

Strong options include OpenAI's Whisper and newer transcription models, Deepgram, AssemblyAI, Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, Azure AI Speech, Amazon Transcribe and ElevenLabs Scribe. For local use, whisper.cpp and faster-whisper run Whisper efficiently on your own hardware.

Choose by language support, accuracy on your audio, speaker labelling, real-time streaming, timestamps, privacy and cost. For Indian languages and code-mixed speech, test carefully, and consider models from AI4Bharat alongside commercial services. Benchmarks rarely match your recordings, so transcribe a sample of real audio, including noisy and accented speech, and compare word error rates. Live speech-to-text in my OCR & Speech Workspace sits alongside OCR, which suits document and meeting workflows.

Why is realtime the future of speech to text?

Realtime transcription powers experiences that batch transcription cannot: voice agents that respond within a second, live captions for accessibility, meeting notes as you speak, and translation during conversations. Users increasingly expect immediate, streaming results.

Streaming models transcribe audio as it arrives, returning partial results that update as more context comes in, with latency of a few hundred milliseconds. Combined with fast language models and text-to-speech, they enable natural voice conversations with AI. Challenges include accuracy on partial audio, deciding when a speaker has finished, and cost at scale. For students, live captions also make lectures easier to follow and review. Live speech-to-text in my OCR & Speech Workspace reflects this shift toward immediate transcription.

Why does speech to text not work on iPhone?

Check that Dictation is enabled under Settings, General, Keyboard, that the correct dictation language is selected, and that the app has microphone permission. Screen Time restrictions, a faulty microphone or network issues can also stop dictation.

Tap the microphone key on the keyboard to start; if it is missing, Dictation is disabled or restricted. Test the microphone with Voice Memos, and remove cases covering microphones. Many languages run on the device, but some features need internet. Restart the iPhone and install iOS updates. If Siri also fails, reset Siri and Dictation settings by turning them off and on. Background noise and speaking too quickly reduce accuracy rather than stopping it completely.

Why won't text to speech work on your iPhone?

Enable Speak Selection or Speak Screen under Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content. Then select text and tap Speak, or swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the whole screen read aloud.

If you hear nothing, raise the volume, check that audio is not routed to disconnected Bluetooth headphones, and confirm a voice is downloaded under Spoken Content, Voices. Some apps block text selection, which prevents Speak Selection; Speak Screen often still works, and you can also ask Siri to speak the screen. VoiceOver is a separate, full screen reader with different gestures, so turn it off if you enabled it accidentally. Restarting the phone fixes many temporary audio issues.

Which Kindles have text to speech?

Current Kindle e-readers, including recent Kindle, Paperwhite, Oasis and Scribe models, support the VoiceView screen reader through Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Fire tablets include text-to-speech, and older Kindle Keyboard models had built-in speakers with Text-to-Speech.

Also asked as: which kindles have text to speech feature

VoiceView is designed mainly as an accessibility screen reader, reading menus and book text aloud. Not every book supports text-to-speech, since publishers can restrict it, and the book's details page shows whether it is enabled. Kindle apps on phones can use the device's screen reader or built-in read-aloud features. For a narrated experience, Audible audiobooks with Whispersync let you switch between reading and listening. Check Amazon's current device documentation, since features change.

Is text to speech AI bad for the environment?

Individual text-to-speech requests use relatively little energy, especially compared with training large models or streaming video. At scale, however, data centres running AI models consume significant electricity and water, so efficiency and clean energy matter.

On-device text-to-speech, such as built-in phone voices or local models like Piper, uses minimal energy and avoids network transfer. Cloud neural voices use more computing but are still modest per request. The bigger environmental question is the growth of AI overall, driven by large language and image models. Practical steps include caching generated audio, choosing efficient models and providers with renewable energy commitments, and avoiding unnecessary regeneration. Measuring energy per request helps teams compare options honestly.

What is Adobe Speech to Text in Premiere Pro?

Speech to Text in Adobe Premiere Pro automatically transcribes the dialogue in your video sequence, then generates captions and enables Text-Based Editing, where you edit video by deleting or rearranging words in the transcript.

After downloading language packs, transcription runs on your computer, supporting many languages. You can identify speakers, search the transcript for moments, remove pauses and filler words, and style captions for social media or accessibility. Review transcripts for errors in names and technical terms before publishing captions. For creators, it saves hours of manual captioning and makes rough cuts of interviews and talks much faster. Export transcripts as text files for blog posts or show notes.
