Key takeaways

  • SIH is a national, multi-month competition with problem statements from ministries and industry, run through colleges. The internal college round is where most teams are eliminated.
  • Choose a problem statement whose owner you understand and whose data you can actually get or simulate; read the full statement, not the title.
  • Ministry judges are domain experts. They score whether you understood their problem and constraints, not how many technologies you used.
  • Build a working prototype early, present it in the ministry's vocabulary, and show a pilot path that could scale within government systems.
  • The current year's rules, dates and eligibility live only on the official portal. Read it before anything else, including this page.

What is Smart India Hackathon?

Smart India Hackathon is a nationwide competition organised by the Ministry of Education's Innovation Cell with AICTE and partners, in which student teams build solutions to problem statements posted by central and state government departments, public sector organisations and industry [1][2]. Teams register through their own college, go through an internal selection round, and shortlisted teams compete at the national level, where the problem statement's owners sit on the judging panels. It has software and hardware editions and runs on a months-long calendar.

Everything specific to a year, the dates, the number of problem statements, the team size rules, the prize amounts, changes each cycle and is published on the official portal [1]. This page is about the parts that do not change: how the structure works and what wins inside it.

I have won three hackathons and lost one that taught me more, and I have judged and mentored at college events since. SIH is different from a weekend campus hackathon in two ways that decide everything: the judges own the problem, and the internal round is the real competition.

At a campus hackathon you impress an engineer. At SIH you have to convince the person whose department will live with your solution. Build for the second person from day one. Pranjul Rathour

How does Smart India Hackathon work, step by step?

Problem statements are published on the portal. Your college registers as a participating institute and appoints a coordinator. Students form teams within the rules and register under the college. The college runs an internal hackathon to shortlist teams, typically a handful per problem statement it nominates. Shortlisted teams submit ideas through the portal, are evaluated, and the selected ones are invited to the grand finale, a multi-day build at a nodal centre, judged by the problem statement owners and experts.

The rules for team size, gender composition, mentor involvement and eligibility have varied between editions; the portal's current rules override anything you read elsewhere, including here [1].

How do I register for Smart India Hackathon?

Registration runs through your institute, not directly as an individual. Find your college's SIH coordinator, often in the training and placement cell or the innovation cell, confirm the college is registered for the current edition, form your team within the rules, and register your team under the college on the portal by the deadline. If your college is not registered, the coordinator registers the institute first. Start this a month before the internal round, because approvals move at college speed.

If your college has never participated, a small group of students taking the portal's institute registration page to the principal with the previous year's results usually gets it done. That is how many first-time colleges join.

How do I choose a problem statement?

Read the full statement, not the title, and answer four questions: who owns it and what outcome do they need; what data or systems does the solution depend on and can you get or simulate them; what is the constraint that makes it hard for the owner today; and can your team build a working prototype of the core in the time available. Prefer statements where you can reach a real user of the department's service. Avoid ones that need data you will never see.

KrishGyan, which won Changethon at IIT Roorkee, came from exactly this reading of a problem: farmers who do not read or type, a voice-first assistant in their language over WhatsApp [4]. The same reading applies to ministry statements: find the constraint everyone else will ignore, and design for it.

How do I clear the internal college round?

Treat the internal presentation as the final, because for most teams it is. Bring a working prototype, even a thin one, not a slide deck. Open with the department's problem in its own words, demo the core in two minutes, show one architecture slide, then say what a pilot would look like. Practise the pitch with a timer. Ask the coordinator what the internal judges weigh and match it. Most internal panels eliminate on clarity and feasibility, not on ambition.

What do SIH judges look for at the grand finale?

The same four things every hackathon judge scores, weighted toward the owner's reality: feasibility, does it work and can it run in their environment; innovation, is there an insight about their problem; practicality, would their staff and citizens adopt it; and problem solving, did you understand the constraint. Ministry judges add a fifth: fit with existing systems and policy. Show that you know what the department already runs and how your solution attaches to it.

Those four criteria are the ones I put on screen when I brief a judging room, and the ones I have written about after sitting on panels [5][6]. At SIH the panel includes the people who wrote the statement, so the fifth criterion carries more weight than at any campus event.

What should the SIH presentation contain?

The portal prescribes a template for the idea submission; use it exactly. Inside it, the order that wins: the problem as the department experiences it, the proposed solution in one diagram, a working demo or a video of one, the technical approach with honest limits, feasibility and the constraints you honoured, the impact for the department and the citizen, and a pilot plan. Keep every slide readable from the back of a room.

The general pitch deck structure I recommend, adapted to whatever template the portal requires that year, is written up separately [7].

How do I build the prototype for SIH?

Build the core workflow end to end first, with seeded or simulated data that looks like the department's, and make it demonstrable in three minutes. Honour the constraints in the statement, low bandwidth, regional languages, feature phones, offline use, from the first version, because that is where ministry judges look. Keep an architecture that could plausibly run inside government infrastructure. Add features only after the demo path is solid.

What happens after Smart India Hackathon?

Winners receive prizes, and in many cases the problem owner explores piloting or developing the solution further with the team; several past solutions have continued as products or government pilots. Whether you win or not, the project, the repository and the write-up are the durable result. Publish them, add the finale to LinkedIn under honours with the statement and department, and use the story in interviews. The line "grand finalist, Smart India Hackathon, problem statement from [department]" is understood by every Indian recruiter.

Common mistakes SIH teams make

Choosing a statement by its title. Building for three months without ever showing a department user. Presenting the tech stack before the problem. Ignoring the constraint in the statement, offline, language, device, and getting caught in Q&A. Six people with no roles. A demo that needs the venue's Wi-Fi. Reading the previous year's rules instead of this year's. Every one of these is avoidable with the checklists above.

Can you mentor or judge our SIH team or internal hackathon?

Yes. I mentor teams on statement selection, scoping and the demo, and I judge and brief judging panels at college internal rounds, on-site across India or remote. Send the statement you are considering and your date. Email pranjulrathour41@gmail.com or use pranjulrathour.scult.in/invite.
